Tri-Pacer at Conington

Was left unsupervised today, so took my son for lunch at Conington flying club, and tried my new camera.
As well as a Vans RV something and a Skyranger, there was also this very sweet Tri-Pacer. The first time I had seen one for a while, and they are bigger than I thought!

I seem to recall my dad having a photo of early PA.22’s in B&W somewhere and the last two of the reg are prominantly displayed on the fuselage side.

Sure does. The farmhouse in the background is known to the staff as ‘The Farmhouse’ and is now home to a biz jet charter company called GreggAir. The hangar now has no aircraft access that side as that is now the drive up to the main buildings. I think all the G-AP and G-AR reg Pipers arrived through Kidlington though I may be wrong.

It’s amazing the number of these registrations I recognise from their passing through Kidlington in the days when they were arriving in this country.

This bring back any memories then?

The tail dragger may well be a Vagabond. If it’s not a Cub or Tripacer I’m lost on Piper tail draggers ( aprt from the Enforcer of course.)

It’s amazing the number of these registrations I recognise from their passing through Kidlington in the days when they were arriving in this country. Does anyone know the current status of G-APXS? She may have been re-registered countless times since the days when she carried that reg. If it’s any help ‘XS is/was a Carribean. May no longer exist or may have been sold abroad. The only reason I ask is that this was the first aircraft I flew in.

Hey, that was the first plane crash I saw, Piper Tripacer at Eastleigh, fuel cut out on take off and he flipped the plane. Before your time though! :p

No I was quite impressed by it, especially as it managed to keep its engine running, whilst the Tri-Pacer conked out on tick over and had to be re-started!

😀 Bet he had forgotten to turn the main fuel valve on. 😀

Yup.

I’m not sure the taildragger is a Pacer – I think it is actually a Vagabond.

A long discussion with the owner of NG led me to abandon the thoughts I’d had of converting NE to the Tri-Pacer engine when the time comes.

The extra 42 bhp delivers an increase of 10 knots in the cruise speed and ups the fuel consumption from our 24/26 litres per hour to around 34 litres per hour.

No-brainer from where I stand.

Don’t be deceived by the fact that it looks like a deck-chair. The Sky Ranger is an excellent performer. Try giving Paul Dewhurst a call at FlyLight at Sywell. I’m sure he’ll be delighted to arrange for you to have a go. Even with two-up, you’ll be amazed at the rate of climb after a PA-28!

I believe the tail dragger in the line is a Vagabond – G-BDVB if my sad memory doesn’t fail me.

Wessex Boy. The homebuilt in the picture with ‘HP taxying out is a Europa if that is of any interest.

Yep, The Europa is a resident at Conington, but I have never seen it move, or even with the covers off…
