Tribute Plaque for Two Royal Navy Airmen, USA

Today, June 6, is not only the D-Day 67th anniversary but also the date marking the untimely deaths of two Royal Navy airmen in America. I covered the incident in this forum two years ago. Today I made the short 15-minute drive from my home to nearby Needham, Massachusetts, to pay my respects to these two men at the place where a brass plaque was dedicated on April 12, 2005. A British flag always flies behind the plaque. The air trainees, Sub-Lieutenant Albert John Dawson, 20, and Air Mechanic First Class Stanley Clive Wells, 28, were flying out of their American training base at NAS Squantum, MA. Over the towns of Wellesley and Needham, their single-engine trainer began to experience engine trouble. After losing altitude, the plane crashed and exploded, killing the two fliers. Dawson and Wells are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, MA. The Mayor of Needham Market, England, attended the 2005 dedication.
