Details have just been posted on the Newark Air Museum website about the Tribute to the Lightning event, which will be hosted at the museum on 18th and 19th May 2013. This will be approximately 25 years since the museum agreed to purchase Lightning T5 XS417 from RAF Binbrook
More details about what is being planned for the event can be found on the website news page!
As part of this event the museum is seeking additional Lightning related displays and cockpits.

Hi Howard,
WOS informed me and the ZF590 crew on Saturday evening of your sad loss, please accept my sincere condolences to all. I know that the loss had a big impact on the NAM team but their professionalism shone through over the whole weekend, a legacy that I am sure he would be proud of.

Hi Martyn,
Thanks for the kind words and I’m sorry that I didn’t get a proper chance to speak with everyone as much as I’d have liked; circumstances got in the way!
For many at NAM the event was tinged with a degree of sadness; on Friday evening we’d heard that one of our original founders and a current member of staff had passed away unexpectedly on Friday afternoon. This sad loss has left us with quite a few issues to try and resolve in the coming days – once I can get the details agreed with the family I hope pass on more information, as I’m sure that some people with know the person quite well.

Hi TO
I would just like to thank you and the ever friendly staff at NAM for inviting me and all other fellow Lightning owners to this event. I had a fab time, the displays inside and outside were excellent, the guest speakers were brilliant and the enthusiasm they gave us for keeping the Lightning alive was encouraging to say the least. A fantastic weekend, I am so looking forward to Cockpitfest!
Regards,
Martyn (XP757)

Hopefully we may get it rectified when we get the much overdue update done to the site; at the moment we try to cover it with the following second paragraph:
“Arrangements for these events are sometimes made at short notice or details might change. As a consequence the best way for you to keep up to date is to check out the News & Information page of this website. This page is regularly updated and is the best place for up to the minute news about what’s going on at the museum.”
I’ll look out for you tomorrow!! 🙂

Understand but as a user I would naturally look to a ‘special events’ section for, errrr, special events!! Not a news section.
Anyhow, forecast looking very nice tomorrow so looking forward to it muchly.

Hi Ken,
The way the museum website is set up the only section we can afford to manage ourselves is the News Pages and Gallery – the Events Page points you to the news page and is also hyperlinked, where you will find the following:
http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/newsItem.php?id=557
http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/newsItem.php?id=640
http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/newsItem.php?id=641
We know that it’s not ideal but basically all we can afford for a CMS based package! As you can see from the last link there have been 14 updates!!
As an addendum the BBMF gave us three passes and for various reasons I was out on the airfield at the side of the old runway and the final run by the Hurricane in particular, viewed from that location was astounding!!! :eagerness:
I almost forgot this one:

Plus – have a good trip; I will be there from lunchtime onwards – double booked with a memorial dedication!!
Several of the links above have now gone off-line and they have been replaced by the following ‘Thank You!’ http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/newsItem.php?id=654

Hi TO23 – well a couple of us bods driving up from Suffolk tomorrow.
WRT the turnout – you haven’t helped yourselves by having nothing apparent on your website about the day – nothing even in the ‘special events’ section that I can see.
I only found out about it via lightningpilots.com.

A small album of photographs from today’s Tribute to the Lightning event have been uploaded in here!
Today was overcast but dry and there was an excellent flypast by a Hurricane & Spitfire from the BBMF!
With a better weather forecast tomorrow hopefully these photographs may whet few appetites and encourage a few more visitors to venture over to Newark!!

Good to report a better weather forecast for tomorrow – plus BBMF flypast confirmation also received earlier today! :eagerness:

Unashamed bump for this one today – tables are set out; NAM’s exhibits moved into places; first exhibitors due on site tomorrow; good local media coverage courtesy of the BBC – hope to see some forumites at the weekend!

Just 7 days to go until the Tribute to the Lightning event – the first radio interview has just been completed on BBC Radio Nottingham for next weeks’ event; and confirmation has been received for a live outside radio broadcast from the museum for the event next Saturday afternoon! :eagerness:

I’ve just been sorting out the participant passes for the Lightning Event on 18 & 19 May and these will be posted out tomorrow to the 15 organisations / individuals who have sent through their full contact details.
I believe that there are a couple of forumites who the museum is still waiting to hear from with your contact details – if you send these through as requested, I’ll send out your passes!!

As the museum starts to count-down to the Lightning event next month, some of the Lightning Archive images have been reloaded on to the NAM website here!

Sorry to hear about the outcome of your last flight in XS417!
Did you see the other request on the NAM website re-sortie recording detailed in here – do you still have the Log Book details that you could send through?
The recorded details are growing steadily thanks to lots of input from ex-pilots.
By: Oily Rag - 27th April 2013 at 11:53
Curiously, I flew XS417 half a dozen times while a student on the LTF.
Final trip in in WAS my final trip, as Pete Boothroyd chopped me…!!
Fond memories.
