Trip Report-FRA-MAN with BA Part 2

BA1707-30/03/04
Aircraft: G-MANS
Scheduled Time of Departure: 11:00
Actual Time of Departure: 11:43
Scheduled Time of Arrival: 12:00
Actual Time of Arrival: 12:18
This is part 2 of the exchange trip, this time to Manchester. I got up at 05:30(German time!) and left for the school where the coach was picking us up. After an hours journey down the autobahn, we arrived at Terminal 2 at FRA for our return trip back to Manchester. So we checked in at the BA section(I checked in the World Club Class Desk!!) to discover I again had a window seat!! We headed off to the first security check where we put our bags through a screen and we walked through a metal detector machine. Then off to the second check- passports and boarding cards, and then the third check, where everyone is frisked. I was the only one in the party who didn’t bleep anywhere when being frisked!! We were then let loose in Terminal 2 to explore. Some immature people in my group went on the little toddler bus and sang ‘wheels on the bus’!! soon, we were boarded our bus out to the aircraft. We went past all sorts of interesting aircraft until we parked up outside G-MANS. I boarded and found my seat was just behind one of the engines. We pushed back just as G-CFAC was pulling up on stand and headed off for the runway. We passed the US Air Force planes as we taxied down for a 07L departure(same runway as we landed on coming). We waited for seven planes to depart and then it was our turn. We roared down the runway and departed over the autobahn. We turned left and up over Dusseldorf airport and Berlin where I saw at least two airports. We got our all-day deli, which was cheese and roast chicken sandwich which was a lot better. The crew then came round with drinks and then collected up the rubbish before making an announcement saying that the chief executive of American Airlines was aboard!! We commenced our descent over Hull before turning sharply whilst a frightening noise came whilst the flaps where lowered. We lined up on 06L and landed hardly. The captain apoligised for this, saying it was rather “tub-u-lent”!! He was Scottish so I forgive him!! He then welcomed us to a sunny, yes sunny Manchester! I watched a Delta and Malaysian depart before disembarking. A quick wait in arrivals after immigration and we were on our way home.

General comments: Not impressed at all by BA. The outbound flight was awful with the return being much better. The outbound flight’s food gave the person next to me food poisoning and was sick on the bus to the terminal. On the way back, the crew cared a lot more and it was in general, a more pleasant flight.

We get a mixture of the 142(nearly always G-MANS), Avro RJ100s and Embraer ERJ-145.

When I fly BA to BRS from FRA it’s always T2 which is ok but I prefer T1.
The a/c (ERJ-145) is always parked at a remote stand and it takes a while on the bus. We normally get G-EMBY or G-EMBH or G-EMBV.
I chose LH this time as they were cheaper (£73.60 total rtn) and for a change as BA from BRS gets very boring

I would say BA is better for service as you get drinks and better food but they are a rip-off as theres no-one to compete at BRS.

Terminal 2 is nice and modern as well. There are some very interesting airlines that use this terminal including Korean Air, Northwest, Royal Brunei, Sky Airlines and Air India. I was only there to be transported back and forth between England and Germany but I was very impressed. There are not enough airbridges though, resulting in many aircraft using remote stands.

I really liked Fankfurt Airport. It’s really modern amd clean. everything is very efficient and works well. It’s the complete opposite of LHR which is quite frankly an embarrement to the UK.
Yes, it was T1 I flew from which is mainly LH with a few other star alliance airlines. The viewing platform has a small fee but it’s worth it. You have to be searched but it’s not a problem if your just going up there to take pics and see the planes.

Whilst I was staying in Germany I went on thr tour of FRA airport. You pay for the ticket (not much) and then you are led with all the other people downstairs and onto a bus. Before you get on the bus you are searched. Then you sit down and when everyone is on you drive to and go through the airside gates where the bus itself is checked (for a bomb or something I expect).

You drive around the and the tour guide says what’s going on and a bit about the airport. Although it’s in German it’s still fun to look and see what’s going on. My friend speaks fluent German as well as English as his parents are German so he could translate. The whole tour lasts about 40/45 mins and you go all around the airport except the USA militarty section for obvious reasons and for the fact that we would have to cross an active runway.

I saw loads of LH’s everywhere, the new UA livery 777 a BA A319 a TCX (Condor) 763 a Varig MD-11 plus LOADS of other things. The cargo section had a Fedex MD-11 and a TNT 146 as well as other a/c. The bus driver stopped next to the runway so we could see an AA 762 taking off right next to us.

I would definatly reccomend FRA airport to fly from or to look around and take pictures..

A good trip report overall green320 well done!

I haven’t yet got round to writing my trip report of my recent LH LHR – FRA (03/04/04) FRA – LHR (17/04/04) flights on this forum.
However, I have put them on www.carsurvey.org/air/ and if I put it on here too people might get a bit fed up of hearing about the same flight! So I might not do.

It might be more accurate to compare my TCX flights with the XLA flights(note: I have done reports on them) as they are both chartered. I have to say, these flights were a lot better than the 757 shuttle flights I had. The two aircraft I had are now with FCA which I am not keen on either, after a horrible set of flights with them to America and back on the 767. I still would say that I am not keen on BA though.

SkyHIGH: Please note, I have changed my avatar!!

By the way, it was a student who was sick on the bus!! I am grateful as he was sitting next to me on the plane out!! I worded it wrongly so it sounded like the teacher was sick!! What I meant was the student who was sick, also said he sounded dodgy!!

Your second set of comments sound much more reasoned and I admire anyone who admits a mistake and can accept constructive critiscism. Just be grateful FRA ATC didn’t ask your crew to do a swing-over onto the paralell runway, as they sometimes do – your teacher may not have waited until he was on the bus!

It is difficult to compare large jet ops to commuter travel though and perhaps a little harsh. They are generally two completely types of operation. For example, your TCX flights are chartered flights and will be completely different to you FRA BACX experience – different type of market, plus it will be different from say a 747 to LAX or a 757 shuttle LHR-GLA.

That said, purely as an observer your comments have validity and most airlines welcome constructive critiscism. Perhaps you could pass on your comments in a well-worded letter?

Just a final note – 07L at FRA is not the same as 25R! It is the same tarmac but the approaches are obviously different – being padantic i know but it is a relevant difference. Happy Landings.;)

I am judging by another horrible set of flights with BA on G-CPEP and G-CPEU.

I’m not sure how one flight can justify your tag “BA hater?”

I am not terrified of the flap noise!! It is just rather loud compared to other aircraft I have been on.

The advantage of a 146/RJ100, it can drop like a stone!
