Trip to England

I have a trip to China coming up (wish I didn’t) and the airfare is actually less to go on around and stop in England for a week.

I have flexibility in my schedule, but my trip needs to be sometime in May so I can be home for several airshows already on the calendar for June.

I was last in England in 1995, went to Duxford (before the new 8th AF addition) and the RAF museum at Hendon. I have never seen an airshow in England.

Any suggestions?

Steve Patterson

At the very least we should drink a little of that black stuff you call beer!

Saves me asking what the timing is for the Sunset shows.
We were coming anyway but Old Speckled Hen to hand reinforces it.
Don’t think Duxford beforehand’s very likely as although Mrs DHfan has very good aeroplane tolerance, only a week after Merlins over Malta would be pushing it. 🙂

Thanks AiB, it was a good week, wasn’t it 😀 😀

Next time you’re at Old Warden, come and say hello, it’d be nice to put a few faces to the names in the posts.

Rather than get confused between threads, I’ve started a new one on RV’ing at Old Warden. Check that for latest details.

May 15th

Airbedane
thanks for your kind offer of a PA anouncement.
16.00 hrs sounds good to me.
Don’t let Steve Patterson near the Sea Hurricane–I think he’ll try and escape back to the colonies with it!
Last week was a great week.
I haven’t enjoyed myself that much for a long while.
It realy blew the Winter away–at last!
Keep up the good work.
Andy

Old Warden 15th May

I’ve put an offer on another thread to arrange an RV for Forum members at Old Warden shows. I would suggest the Flypast Stand, or the Beer Hut at, say, 1600? I’ll get a PA message put out to that effect on the day. If you want a differrent time or place, let me know. Don’t forget to wear a Flypast sticker or Badge.

A couple of notices:

1. The May (and September) evening shows this year are combined with model aircraft events. There will be model flying from 1000 until about 1530, the aicraft will then be pushed out an the evening show will start at 1830.

2. Charles Wells beer is good, but the local pub (Hare and Hounds) also sells Old Speckled Hen on draught – ’nuff said, hic!!

3. Following that, you’ll need accommodation close by. There are limited rooms at Old Warden Park – see the Collections web site – and Old Warden Post Office, nextdoor to the Pub, offers B&B, but in both cases, you must book early.

Enjoy,
Airbedane

Ok, only 4 weeks until the Old Warden show on May 15th. I know of at least 5 members who are going to come out and play that evening (yes Robbo, I’m counting on you). Andy in Beds and I have a bet on that we’ll get at least 20 forum members to come out and see the yank try and drink warm beer. You wouldn’t want to miss that?

There has also been talk of meeting at Duxford on the morning of the 15th, followed by the twilight show at Old Warden. A whole day of warbirds. Any takers???

Also, if anyone is interested in meeting up the week before send me a PM. I’ll be doing the “museum and airfield” tour of southern England with some of this forum’s finest.

Cheers,

Steve Patterson

Thanks for the info Arthur. I will be flying into Hong Kong, then spending some time touring factories in the Guangzhou provence.

Probably won’t have much time for sight seeing in China, but that’s what England is for.

And yes Rob, t-shirts come in all sizes.

Steve,

Don’t know where exactly you are going to in China, but there are a few museums with an interesting collection to be found… Datang Shan just north of Beijing being of course the most famous one, and it is absolutely worthwile. I don’t think anyone will not be impressed by three Tu-2s in a row, or a Be-6, or two Tu-4/B-29s…

If you’re in the London area then the Brooklands Museum might also be an option. Lots of atmosphere, interesting airplanes(Wellington, Vanguard, VC10, 1-11, Hunter, Viking, Viscount and more) and some fast cars thrown in as well.

I shall make an effort to be at OW on the 15th then. Shall introduce you to Airbedane and Hairyplane if they arent too busy.

If you can make it the Midland Air Museum at Coventry Airport is pretty good.

Hope you can come out and play on the 15th for the sunset display. It’s worth a Sea Fury T-shirt (one of the perks of being a millionaire, old boy).

Come on, can’t let Moggy have all the fun…

My other half said Kinnie was poisonous, I thought she was exaggerating. Apparently not.

Steve, depending on where you choose as a base, Coventry and Cosford are worth a look and could be done on the same day at a push.
The drawback to the IWM at Lambeth, if driving, is there isn’t a car park and all parking meters cost about a pound a second and only take 20p pieces. You can park at them for 4 hours but you’d need a trailer full of cash to carry enough. To be fair that was 10 years ago, they may take bigger coins now. 🙂

We’ve never been to a sunset display either. It’s currently being considered.

On Cue 😀 !

Noel Le Chevalier Agazarian. Aggy for short. Killed in the Middle East. His brother also flew under George Darley later in the war in the Far East funnily enough. And I seem to think his sister was a spy or something.

Aces High – old version:

AGAZARIAN, Noel le Chevalier, joined 609 Squadron as a Pilot Officer in summer 1940, taking part in the Battle of Britain. He shot down a Bf110 on 8th August, and by December had shot down five more fighters and received a third share in a He111. He was then posted to 274 Squadron which was flying Hurricanes in the Western Desert. On 1st May 1941 he destroyed a Bf 109, but on the 16th of the month he was shot down and killed. His final score was 7½ confirmed victories and 3 damaged.

Hi Steve,
There are also a couple of aviation-related museums in Central London that I recommend if you happen to be in the area, the Imperial War Museum at Lambeth and the Science Museum at South Kensington. The IWM at Lambeth is the ‘original’ IWM,things like Duxford were an offshoot.Although the museum is about war in general (and very interesting for that it is too) there are a number of aircraft on display-a genuine Battle of Britain Spitfire (in which a French-Armenian chap scored six victories with 609sqn-cue Snapper),a unique unarmed Fw190A8 which was once one half of a Mistel combination,a Heinkel He162, a Zeppelin-killing Sopwith Camel and one or two others. There are also some cockpit sections and gun turrets etcs in the galleries.
The Science Museum is located next to the Natural History Museum. The flight gallery contains an impressive collection of seriously historic aircraft-Alcock & Brown’s Vickers Vimy,Amy Johnson’s Moth, the first Gloster Whittle,a Schnieder Trophy winning Supermarine S.6B (and the trophy itself) and a whole host of other interesting and unique machines. There is also a very large collection of aero engines on display that you can get quite touchy-feely with, including a Siemens Halske contra-rotating rotary engine, one of very few in existence.
With regard to Duxford, the transport situation has improved since your last visit. There is now a regular bus service between the station and the airfield,I think they run about once an hour on normal days, and they operate ceaselessly on show days. I’ve come up from London on the train and used the bus service and it’s been no hassle, the bus picks you up from the station itself, you shouldn’t have to walk anywhere this time if you use the train! 😀

Yak Fan.. 😀 😀 😀

You have hit the nail on the head. I was happy wid the Mustang thingy, until I worked with Paul. We had a great working relationship (great guy, did a lot for the warbird scene) but, yes, it was a battle to get the Mustang count to less than 50%. 😉 😀

A serious point. As a mag ed (or even here on the forum) wack an Spit or Stang on, and you can relax. Do something ele and a lot of guys yawn. V. narrow, very sad. 🙁

Also, I sorted the pics. Most warbirds vary enough to be classifiable – but how many unsorted pics of P-51Ds did Paul have? Boxes! 😡 😮 So I’d be going to Paul “Which is this one?” “Which is this one?” Nightmare.

I developed a work allergy to Mustangs. Pre D or H’s fine – not too many about – easy to pop in the right file. Show me a D and I’d twitch. Trust me, you would too.

So, yes, I ws a balancing thingy. Don’t know how good, but we did have the biggest feature of Polikarpov I-16s of any journal thanks to some pushing by me; and that could’ve (would’ve) been another Mustang article otherwise.

The medication seems to be working, and I can handle, 2, 3, 4 mebbe 5 or 6 P-51Ds in a line now. The therapy is to go and stand close to them while they run up. Hard, but one does one’s best…

Hmmm.
Quite like ice tea myself. But then I’ve got odd tastes – Mustangs are boring, you can have too many Spitfires, like Buchons, Walrii and a Sunderlands. Still, I’m happy.

Most bizarre and foul soft drink I’ve ever had was ‘Kinnie’ in Malta. It was really, really nasty – but stupidly I kept hoping that I’d ‘aquire the taste’ and kept going. Blegh. Wot an ijit.

However Malta has a lot of other ‘attractions’, including an historic Gladiator which is to be fuly restored and an amazing Spitfire and Hurricane restoration at Ta Quali. Someone told me that there were plans to put Merlins over Malta (cue music, cue dancing girls, cue Glenn Denny…) If you get the changce to go, do. Remember Malta really EARNED it’s George Cross. It’s an amazing history they have.
Cheers
