Trip to Shannon (report with pics)

I’m just home tonight from a nice few days in the South West of Ireland with some buddies. We decided to go to Limerick and flew from Prestwick to Shannon on a Ryanair Boeing 737-200 (EI-CJG both ways) exactly the same one previously owned by Britannia as G-BGYK when I last flew a 732 in 1981 ! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

We went down to PIK on Thursday afternoon to check in for the 1700 flight. Despite getting there in time for the recommended two hour check in, we had to wait half an hour for it to open. When it did and we went back there were two massive lines waiting to check in for the Shannon flight, amongst several other massive queues for the various other Ryanair services. ๐Ÿ™

The place was mobbed, not a sight I’m used to seeing at PIK to be honest, must be the September weekend effect we decided ?

PIK is due for a refurb as it’s a little behind the times in terms of modern airport terminal standards, but to be honest I don’t think it looks all that bad, especially when it’s busy. Here are a few views from the check-in/public side of things. Note the Barcelona bound hen party in their 50’s American high school uniforms… :p

Most of these pics were taken on my pocket fuzzy-cam. :p

I understand the Shannon based 732’s were replaced by 738’s on October 11th? Can anyone confirm this?

The seat buckles didn’t still say Britannia on them (lol) ๐Ÿ˜€

Another urban (or aviation) myth debunked then!

I have some footage from a DVD showing those Concorde training sessions from Shannon, including a nice shot of one climbing out over nearby Bunratty Castle and Durty Nellies pub where we stopped for a pint yesterday. Here’s the same angle the video was shot from, just imagine Conorde tearing across the top of frame.

That’s were I had my first pint(s) of Guinness ๐Ÿ˜€
My aunt treated me! ๐Ÿ™‚
– And my dad was trown out of Dirty Nellies in the 70’s after dancing on tables. ๐Ÿ˜€
Well, my father won’t talk about it. It was the time before he knew my (Irish) mum! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜€ Don’t say, that Germans are not funny!!!

Anyway, today is his birthday! ๐Ÿ™‚
So I’m offline for today!

The long runway and the nearby ocean is very important for the airport.
I remember, that the Concorde trained takeoffs and landing approching years ago. My mum, at that time working at the Duty Free, went on one such flight. She nearly got heart-attack! ๐Ÿ˜€

Yeah it’s a bit like Prestwick in terms of operation except PIK no longer needs to be used as a touchdown for departing US passenger flights like it used to.

Its not Aer Lingus’ policy to serve both SNN and DUB with one flight, its the result of the bilateral route restrictions between Ireland and the USA. I believe they are trying to scrap it though, as hardly anyone gets on at SNN apparently.

All three Aer Lingus US flights leaving Shannon yesterday looked pretty busy to me. Judging by the various check-in queues that is…

A boy from County Clare

Well, Ren Frew, you made my day!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Born in Co. Clare, now living in Germany, it was great this morning to see your report on this forum.
My mum worked during the 70’s at Shannon Duty Free and my dad worked at a factory near the airport. My uncle and his sons still work there!

A month ago I flew with Aer Lingus from Duesseldorf to Shannon via Dublin.
From DUB to SHN I flew with a A330. The aircraft was nearly empty, because it came fron the States first to Dublin, then flew on to Shannon 2 hours later.
Next time, I should take a cam with me. ๐Ÿ˜ก
That’s Aer Lingus policy, serving their two Hub’s with one flight.
As a kid, I flew with a B742 from DUB to SHN.

As a teenager, my uncle showed me and his son around the airport.
We were at the tower, the old terminal, the fire brigade and so much more.
I even remember walking around the aircrafts, like the pilots, ๐Ÿ˜Ž and we we drove fast up the runway. more ๐Ÿ˜Ž
But since 9-11 such tours are forbidden. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

Now you see some AN-124’s at SHN.
During the Gulf War III, the USAF used Shannon as a base for their cargo and air refueling planes (C-5, C-17, KC-135, KC-10 etc.).

Next time, you’re in Shannon and Limerick, you should visit the Foynes Flying Boat Museum.
It’s a nice museum about flying boat service – and the history of Irish Coffee ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜€ .

Go raibh mรญle maith agat!
