I’m interested in the Triton. Is there anything going on towards a full scale naval unit ?
Triton
Will it become the replacement for the type 23 frigate ? And where are the advantages/disadvantages of this special hullshape ?

As I understand it FSC is effectively on hold until certain other aspects of the RN orbat are determined e.g CVF, T45, MARS etc. once these are resolved then any required capability/effect not delivered by the rest of the Fleet would be rolled into the FSC. Hull form for FSC will be determined then .Meanwhile T23 (and T22) will be retained in service.

Oh right. I am releived. Yes I agree that the trimaran concept is a good one and I hope it progresses into service eventually.

The Future Surface Combatant (FSC) program was cancelled, not the Trimaran concept, the Triton demostrator completed phase 1 of its trials but phase 2 were cancelled due to costs.
The Triton trimaran demostrator was put up for sale in March 2004.
The story of the FSC program, the pros and cons of trimarans and the Triton are very well covered here- http://frn.beedall.com/fsc.htm

I though the Brit Trimarans had been cancelled.

Why was it cancelled? Thought it was a good concept…

Sad news. I really liked that idea of having much space on a small ship.
I hoped that the replacemnts of the ‘standard’-frigates (Bremen, Kortenaer) and the type 23 could be based on the same platform. Lürssen had a similar, but by far not that advanced trimaran design. 🙁

General Dynamics team entered a trimaran design in the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) competition.

The strong points about designing a trimaran instead of mono hull is that you’ll have more deck space, which are useful when it comes to helo landing zones. And perhaps more important, the hull will require less depth which means lower fuel consumption and higher top speed.
There are disadvantages as well. I believe that catamaran sailing ships can behave very dangerously during bad weather and high waves due to their small depth. The same should go for trimarans.
It’s an interesting design at least, and I think it could have a future when it comes to smaller sized vessels (ie corvettes) that need a bit larger helo landing zones than todays mono hull designs can give you.

Take a look at Richard Beedall’s Navy Matters site http://frn.beedall.com/fsc.htm
It has a good section and links on Trimaran designs.
