Trolly Acc bits

I don’t know if anyone will have any ideas on this, but I’m trying to get a grasp on the battery arrangement of a standars RAF trolly acc in order to get one working. Does anyone have a wiring diagram available of how the batteries were arranged to acheive 12/24 volt (half the cells rigged in parallel?). Also, any idea where a supply of cells may be available? All ideas most gratefully received. Thanx

One of my mates has replied

Hello John, don’t know for sure but I think the Trolly Acc’s had two 12V 80AH batteries, all aircraft that I ever worked on and did battery changes on used 12V 40AH batteries coupled to give 24 Volts if there were two of them or series parallel if there were four batteries, the generators on the Aircraft were regulated to 27.5 Volts.

you don’t want a leccy, you need a GSE (ground equipment) mechanic, they are the ones who used to look after them.

George ,I am currently refurbing a trolley ack at Coventry airport that the Classic Flight are using.
When I go over next I will take some pics and send them on to you.
Ours has two batteries in it connected together and a battery charger in the front compartment to recharge them up. Probably not how it was done before but it works now.
One of our volunteers was a ‘Lecky in the FAA, I will ask him for his memories for you.

trolley accs

I used to pick up 6/8 accs each morning and drop one to each aircraft and evenings they would be returned to the battery charge point,If my memory serves(1964ish)there were two 12v batteries with a link across the back pos/neg to give the requisite voltage.I am not sure if trucks used 12v then but they were sturdy big batteries!!

You want a copy of Air Publication 1464B, Volume 1, Part 8, Section 10, Chapter 13. The following two chapters, 14 & 15, deal with the accumulator charging sets (petrol engine driven generators)…that’s if you want the standard accumulator trolley you’d expect to see next to a Spitfire…

Never having seen the inside of a trolley acc I am not aware of how many cells were fitted but from what I’ve seen from other military equipment with a 12/24 volt arrangement I imagine that they’d be arranged in two banks of 12 volts so with the two banks connected to each other in series so that you could use a single bank to give 12 volts and both to give 24. I’m probably way off the mark but it seems to me the way the military mind works (or doesn’t as the case may be:) )
