Over the past week end, hundereds of people were stranded at KSA due to lack of fuel, for some strange reason Sydney International only had a third of their normal fuel available for international flights, at least two dozen flights were canceled out of Sydney and passengers left wondering what to do, I believe that the Airport gave them free accomadation at the Airport Hilton.
Inbound flights were being diverted to Melbourne and Brisbane to cover the refueling crisis and none of the national flights were reported to has suffered.
I personally had to laugh at this story, how the devil does a major a/p run out of fuel

the biggest problem is that caltex is undergoing routine maintenece at it’s refinery, no contaminated fuel was shipped to KS airport by shell, it was below standard but not contaminated.
if caltex was not down then the problem would be aleviated

Official VB publication:
SYDNEY AIRPORT FUEL SITUATION
Virgin Blue is aware of the shortage of fuel at Sydney Airport and is working closely with fuel companies to ensure we operate all flights as scheduled and on time.
By taking fuel from other airports we have been able to reduced our consumption out of Sydney, therefore we plan on getting all travellers to their destinations as planned.
We will post further information on our website www.virginblue.com.au as this situation develops.
QANTAS has released nothing, nor has Rex

Botany Bay is close yes but not close enough, same with Kernell, just over the other side of the bay, but they still have to transport it there. It did cause a lot of trouble but finally things are starting to get back to normal. Sydney lost a lot of money over the last w/e

Apparently a batch of fuel due for delivery to the airport was contaminated and a tanker due to dock at the refinery had been delayed causing a major shortage

Need to get a commrnt from Steve Rowell on this. Isn’t Botany Bay Refinery very close?
By: mmitch - 29th September 2003 at 19:15
Certainly Heathrow & Gatwick (and I expect others here) have their fuel delivered by pipeline from the refineries. I expect they have some storage for backup, but a major burst or pump failure could spoil everyone’s day!
mmitch.
