Trying to remember an airshow act…

Just once, at a Badminton air day in the 90s, I saw a guy dressed as a crazy old farmer, stunt flying a small aircraft along the grass airstrip while hanging out of the door and flying the thing on one wheel, etc. Anyone know who this was, or have any pics etc?

Wow. That video says a lot about the flying qualities of the Super Cub. Hope our tug pilots don’t see that and get any ideas.

I think if i saw that at an airshow I wouldnt be feeling very well, no matter how much you practice i would think there is a huge room for error there.

I recall a crazy flying routine at Roborough (Plymouth) in the 1960’s probably in a Tiger Moth and possibly by the CFI at the time….. and the dropping of a car from a great height was a much loved feature of Culdrose displays in the 60’s too.

Earlier than the 1990s in the UK I remember in the late 60s/early 70s the “some crazy guy has pinched one of our aeroplanes” act. On one occasion (at Halfpenny Green?) the aircraft dived down behind the hangars on the other side of the runway and an explosion was set off. Some elderly person in the audience, thinking it’s for real, had a heart attack.

Remember also “this car has been parked where it shouldn’t be, we’re just moving it with this helicopter, oops they’ve dropped it” routine.

Roger Smith.

I remember seeing Gary Numan there too, and recognised the name Kulp as soon as I heard it. Nice little airshow was that- sunny day, trees all round, little airfield, Lanc looking huge…

Is that piper modified in some way to not tip over? With the tail that high during taxi and take-off, I’m amazed it doesn’t tip over!

In the UK, in the 1990s, it was almost certainly someone of a most unlikely non de plume and denying being Barry Tempest. AFAIK, Kulp never displayed in that period in the UK.

Wonder if ‘Trapper 69’ might turn up shortly?

I assumed it was an American act, but it was certainly the only time I ever saw it here in the UK. I can’t even imagine such an act being allowed these days! Would love to know who it was I saw, anyhow.

I can’t tell you who did that, but the “crazy old farmer who can’t fly” has been a staple of American Airshows since before any of us were born.

I’m a bit surprised that have it in the UK…:D
