Can anybody help me here. I’m trying to explain to a fellow colleage at work about the very hushed up incident where one of the TSR2 airframes rolled off the back of a lorry it was being transported on to an airfield.
I don’t remember to much detail, but can remember the picture in a book that was at the museum I work at of the TSR2 lying on it’s side in a sorry state with the wagon behind it.
Does anyone have a copy of the picture in another book, or know the whereabouts of the image on the web.
Many thanks
Rob

it seems so strange that an aircraft so advanced was being transported on a lorry from what appears to be the stone age
Thats because in British transport terms it was the stone age:) I’m afraid that while being able to design a wonderful looking machine as the TSR2 was, we couldnt get our heads around prime movers. Hence when driving the motorways of Britain you see nothing but Scania, DAF, MAN, and Volvo trucks.
By the time we could design a half decent heavy goods vehicle, that did not have its roots in steam powered vehicles, the market was lost… where have we seen and heard that before eh?

The whole incident, pictures and all was covered a couple of years ago in Aeroplane Monthly. Can’t say what exact month off hand but it was very interesting.
