Tu-22M Backfires vs. CVBG

As you all probably know the Soviet Navy planned to use the Backfire bomber as a counter to the USN carrier battle groups (CVBG). These bombers could cross half the Atlantic and attack USN ships there with long range cruise missiles.

I think the idea behind this is very good, it offers enormous capability, especially for a navy which didn’t have many carriers. The only problem would have been Soviet technology which was said to be not as good as Western technology. But IMHO it was still better than what the US had, they only had B-52Gs equipped with Harpoon missiles (8 missiles??).

What do you guys think of this?? India is also leasing 4-6 Tu-22M3 Backfire Cs now BTW.
