Anybody here have any recommendations for remap companies ?
I have a 1.6 HDI and only require a little more torque and possibly a couple of extra mpg’s 😀

Unless you want a race or rally car don’t bother with all the mods. If you want a more driveable car with better MPG just get a mid range re-map. I can’t recomend one of these boxes from eBay.

The money certainly is not endless, that is why it is the plan for the year. I will get the parts together slowly and then get the work done for me. I dont want to be messing around with the cam. I am member of quite a few owners cubs/groups, where for some reason people break perfectly good cars all the time, so picking up the parts at a reasonable price is not a problem. It is the fitting and the mapping which has to be done for the cam, that is really going to sting.
I have drilled and grooved disks with Green Stuff pads at the moment which are more than enough but could go for a 306 GTI-6 break set up in the future. The suspension is lowered 50mm so it handles well with out being stupid sump busting low. The front could do with some uprated dampers but is ok for now.
I actually have a de-cat down pipe in the shed but the noise is not for me. The 4 2 1 will have lambada sensors.
Any way I have other forums for being a`boy racer` so back to topic 😮

benyboy. I put a K&N flat panel filter on my “S”, then I changed that for a cold air induction kit, also K&N, On these cold days, it goes like stink!!. I had to rip out the whole Mini air box, and replace it with a new one which came with the Induction kit. The scoop on the bonnet of the “S” takes the cold air, and directs it straight into the K&N box which contains the cone filter, ergo, no hot air from the engine, gets into the system, there is just a slight noise from the filter when you put your foot down. I think the young kids who “Soupe” their engines up by just putting a foam cone filter onto their air intake don’t know what they are doing, ie, just sucking the hot air from their engine BACK into their engine, thus reducing the efficiency of engine combustion.I put the flat panel, from my “S” into my wifes “S”, and the other day, she put the car into sport mode, and floored it to overtake another car, and she felt the torque of the engine for the first time, which caught her out,Ever tried explaining what torque is to a woman?, in the end I gave up.
Those little Saxos, seem to be the favourite of youngsters these days, but in all honesty, I think, that they think, that by just fitting a cone filter, and a big bore exhaust, it will give them an instant gain of 100H.P…If you are going to change the camshaft,on your engine, are you taking the head off at the same time, and having larger inlet and exhaust valves put in?. it will be an expensive job, but the camshaft will on it’s own give small gain, compared to having the larger valves also. You could also at the same time, using a Dremel grinding hand tool, smooth out the inlet and exhaust ports,(Porting) for a smoother passage of air going into and out of the engine, then the 4,2.1, exhaust manifold would work better, if fitted, you could also de-cat the exhaust,(But replace it for the MOT, or it will fail). You could also change the injectors, and a higher pressure fuel pump, to cope with the mods. However, if you or I for that matter, intended to go down that route, I would buy a car with the performance you want, already built in by the manufacturer. You need very deep pockets to mod a car properly, and we havn’t even gone down the route of a re map and rolling road, have we?………..:D..Also the suspension may need to be upgraded, and the faster you go, you need to be able to stop quicker, so you will need better disc pads, and possibly a vented brake discs, the list is endless…………..but the money isnt.

Fifteen year old Saxo, anyone? Although I am not sure that Mrs C wants to be remapped!!:D
12 year old Saxo Charlie 😮
Since I bought it I have taken the useless Piper Cross cone filter off, all it does is suck in warm air from the engine bay, reduce performance and make a racket. Replaced that with a standard air box with K & N filter (cant beat them Lincoln). A little gain there. Then swapped the daft big bore exhaust for a standard box. A little more gain there. Its just had a service (and some suspension mods) at the `Blue2 Garage`, so I reckon it is now some where near back to the 98bhp it should have.
So now with a good base to work from I should be able to make good performance gains this year. Tyres first though. The plan is 4 2 1 manifold, centre section will have silencer (I dont like noisy cars) so some potential gain lost there. Saxsport/Pugsport backbox with 2 inch tale pipe. All stainless. Then a fast road cam, either Catcam or Newman depending on budget.
Waffled on there but this is the point 😮 A generic map on a small petrol engine will not do a great deal. On mine there would be some gain because it is mapped to hold it back a bit from the VTS model but no where near the silly claims I have seen. Actual mods are required. It will be going on for 150 bhp with the mods and a custom map. Which is not to shabby for a little 1.6 8v engine.
Do it Charlie 😮

🙂 Cheers Moggy
I have “Modded” quite a few cars in my time, and the only thing, when I have asked my then Insurers what would “Up” my premium, were Alloy wheels, and an expensive sound system. Needless to say, I didn’t bother with either.

In the last 9 months my long term average mpg has been 56mpg – summer + 54mpg -winter !
It is currently hovering around the 61/62 mark but because of the wetnwindy ‘wevver’ I have been driving a little slower than usual and I am expecting it to drop a little to approx 59/60.
But that would still be a 5mpg or so improvement – which I think is tremendous (10% ish)

I have notified the insurance company and they have not increased the premium from its current massive £165.
At sale time it is a simple matter for the tuner, or indeed a franchise dealer to reinstall the standard mapping.
It is no concern of the DVLA.

Out of interest -If you sell the car could that interfere with the insurance or the DVLA ? i assume they need to know.

By coincidence we had Mrs Moggy’s car remapped just prior to Christmas, the object being to give it a bit more heft in the mid-range, to make overtaking safer and more positive.
Zensport in Braintree did the job and were very efficient. They fitted a Pipersport filter at the same time, I took some persuading on that, there is so much bollox talked about HP gain from fiddling with filters, but it was strongly recommended and, as promised, has not made the car any noisier.
Very tangible improvement just where it was needed.
MPG has improved by about 2 mpg (53 to 55 – in-car computer), but some of this might have been down to a tyre swop I had done the same day.
Very pleased with the result.

So… over the chrimble holiday – I finally got round to a remap for the 5hitroen 5lug ; )
In the end I opted for a Black Code remap – the local agent was doing 30% off ; )
He confirmed that it is the same ecu as the 110hp engine and therefore probably electronically restricted or strangled to 90hp !
Took 2 hours – through the OBD port, like other remap franchises – he downloads the ‘map’ from the ecu and emails it to HQ who then email back the new ‘map’ which is then uploaded into the subject car.
First impressions are really good – more torque, more power and much smoother delivery, seems to have reduced the resonance/vibration at low rpm whilst driving ( I dont think my car has a DM Flywheel).
I will let you know about average mpg next week after I have done some varied driving and a few hundred miles.
Cost £250
Initial impressions are a probable 4-5 mpg improvement in average mpg !

Mr Merry, I think re-mapping is a thing you have done if you have the NEED to, modern cars are well designed to do their every day work, as most want, unless your a Petrol head, there are two ways to go, buy a fast car to start with, or, tune what you have, bit by bit, when you can afford it. Going back to my younger days, and I am sure there are more on the Forum who will agree, the magical figure was 100MPH, these days, even the small 3 cylinder engined cars can reach this speed.
Still fancy the Veyron, FOUR turbos and tops out at just over 255MPH.
Lottery, Lottery, wherefor art there Lottery. 😀

Baz, they mostly use a generic map but they can tweek it to give more torque and where in the the rev range the torque peaks. On my camper I had a rolling road custom map, most companies can do this but it costs about £100 extra, I had to have a custom map as I had modified injectors fitted. Went from 88bhp to 137.9:eagerness:

I don’t blame you Baz by playing safe. I only had the Landrover diesel re- mapped due to the caravan, and I said prior, I had no problems, however, my lad had a NEW Fiat 500 diesel, but even though he left it completely standard, ie NO mods whatsoever, within 9 months, the turbo gave up the ghost, funny old things turbos

I guess – the smaller the engine – the harder the turbo works, personally I would not go below 1.6,the actual mpg figures for the very small diesels are I think by and large very disappointing,I am trying the 1.6 as a little experiment but it is only giving me the same mpg as my old golf 1.9 tdi (although to be fair it is as aerodynamic as a brick LOL).

Thanks guys…
Which company did you use Mr Merry ?
I am assuming most of them use generic programmes/software ?
By: Mr Merry - 20th September 2013 at 17:12
I have had no problems with re-maps, I had my camper van done and the MPG went from low 30’s to about 40 and that’s around town!
Most companies offer different types of re-map, go for one that has the maximum torque, I did this and with the added torque I could go up the box at 1,800rpm just as the turbo was starting to spool up. Added bonus was it went like stink if I was in the mood, though have to say the MPG was worse that pre re-map if I did:)
I now have a motorhome and I have had that mapped, 15% better MPG and so much better to drive.

I WISH. 😀

You should be ok with a petrol engine on extended drain intervals Jim !
Most modern diesels are ok for extended drain but this PSA engine seems too ‘dirty’ for it,the slightly later engine may be a little cleaner but I will just play safe 😀
By: Lincoln 7 - 19th September 2013 at 20:21
My petrol 1.6 turbo has a 2yrs oil/filter time span, which I consider far too long, it uses a fully synthetic 5W-30 oil, which is quite expensive, however it will be changed long prior to what the manual states.I think a re-map is a good thing, inasmuch that as long as you use it for the flexibility it gives you, it’s a good idea, not so good if you intend to thrash it to death. I think Angels price is good, but do they offer the same service as Celtic?.

Did you think about giving them a bell Baz re the possible damage to your cars Turbo?.Also, did they state how much they charge nowadays?.(I did say they were good).

Have not done anything Jim,these engines do have turbo problems anyway sometimes LOL
The oil change interval is far too long at 12,500 miles,I have done 2 very careful oil/filter changes inc syringing out the small amount of old oil in the filter housing but the oil goes black straight away…my previous 5 diesels on extended oil change intervals have retained fairly clean oil for 2,000 miles or so,so personally I will oil change at approx 7,000 miles, even using top quality 5w40 oil – this is not an expensive operation because I can diy it.I cut a 2” hole in the undertray to make the oil drain easier.
I think it would be ones driving style that is important,if you have more torque then you do not need to thrash the engine so much to accelerate…from my point of view it would be to make the car more pleasant to drive – I use cruise control as much as poss anyway !
Celtic did not have a price on view but Angel say £275
