Turboelectric Drives

This post addresses to previous debate about electric drives for future ships, with attention on aircraft carriers. I was quite surprised, and some of you might of know this already, that during the interwar period, 4 or 5 classes of American Battleships are powered by turboelectric drives…that’s extrememly interesting to me and wonder if anyone out there knows more. I understand that today’s power needs are ~200,000hp total, and those battleships yielded something on the order of 40-60,000hp, but that’s over 70 years ago and i think today’s technology is more than adequate to make such drives with nuclear powerplants competitive.
