Turweston – looking for photos

I’ve been given the task of writing the history of Turweston airfield for the current owner and specifically the airfields website.

I have the bare bones but need more to flesh out the story.

Looking for photos of the airfield from 1942 to date. Also aircraft on the field, including interesting visitors in more recent times or perhaps taken at one of the many fly-ins held here. (Remember the Vulcan flypast or the Vimy landing?).

Can anyone point me in the direction of photos of Wellingtons here?

Anything would be of help. Post on here or e-mail to chamberlainp ‘at’ tiscali.co.uk.

Will take the best you’ve got of the Vulcan and Vimy (I was in the Tower for both and didn’t get much opportunity). Some of the bigger choppers on Grand Prix weekends would be good also.

Having lived in Turweston since 1980, parents still there, I’d be interested to see this!

Thanks, a scan or photocopy would be brilliant. It would be so much nicer to add a little of the people to the story rather than just a few photos of the planes (although these are rare enough it seems).
Send me an e-mail or PM for an address – costs covered of course.

Thanks again,
Peter

Peter, on another thread I posted a request about Air Gunners and the positions that they flew in the aircraft; and below is part of that post that gives some context:

“………. yesterday on behalf of NAM I accepted the donation of a Log Book that belonged to a RCAF airman who trained at 1661 HCU – RAF Winthorpe and who eventually went on to Ops with 619 Squadron. Sadly he was killed on the Wessling Raid on the night of 21/22 June 1944.”

In this Log Book are a series of entries between 6th October 1943 and 11th November 1943, of his time with 17 O.T.U. at “Turweston and Silverstone”.

He recorded a total of 23.30 hour day and 16.00 hours night on Wellingtons, each entry has the serial number of the aircraft he flew on – would this information be of interest to you?

Apologies those hours were with A-Flight – additional time was then spent with C-Flight until 13th December 1943, by which time he’d accumulated a total of 85.10 hours.

Hi Peter,

I have a host from the fly-ins (including Vimy and Vulcan – both VAC do’s that I was involved in.)
I also have some from other events too including the Grand Prix weekends and normal days.
A number are on my flickr account (For example HERE) but I also have a number in print form.
If I can help please get in touch and will see what I can do to help.
