Perhaps it should be retitled “Red tails & Rednecks”, if last nights film is anything to go by.

Red Tails

😉

Not Spielberg then, probably why it’s not listed under his name ????

Watched the film for the first time this evening and thoroughly enjoyed it, good flying shots (including at least one from the BoB), interesting story line, one I didn’t know much about until quite recently.

Thanx much guys. Went to Mr Teichman’s (sorry for misspelling him earlier!) website, that’s a splendid collection coming together there. Wonder whether the ’51 might reassume Tuskegee marks someday? (Handsome though the “Jumpin’ Jacques” livery is. There used to be a Mustang over here in the same scheme BTW, but painted silver rather than polished. I forget who the owner was.)

Oddly enough the profile for Mr Teichman’s P-51 on the mustangsmustangs site also shows her as a combat vet…but with a 9th AF unit, and even including the code “5E:B”. Maybe she went first to the UK/France, thence to Italy? Mustang histories can make one’s head spin, eh…

Taken from Peter Teichmans website:

Having spent the Christmas and New Year period at Inglewood 44-72035 began her journey overseas on January 4 1945 with a ferry flight across the mainland USA arriving at Newark, New Jersey, on January 10 where she was prepared for shipment, by boat, overseas and finally left the US on January 24 1945 and was assigned to “Oham” the codeword for the 15th Air Force based in Italy.
——————————————————————————–

44-72035 was assigned to the 332nd fighter group. The 332nd became very famous as the first all Afro American manned Group known as “The Tuskegee Airmen” although references to them at the time refer to them as “The Red Tails”. She entered combat with the 15th Air force around March 1945 serving out the last few months of the war on escort and ground attack sweeps over Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. She still carries the battle scars to this day, with bullet repairs in several places on the fuselage.
——————————————————————————–

After the wars end the four fighter groups of the 15th Air Force remained in Italy until the summer of 1945 and, between July and September 1945, all returned to the USA, where they were all inactivated by November, with newer aircraft retained and returned to the USA for continued service. Such was the case with 44-72035, which is recorded as having returned to the mainland USA on October 10 1945 and placed into storage where she remained until January 1947, at which time she was turned over to the 4112 Base Unit at Olmstead AFB, Pa to undergo and overhaul in preparation for service with an Air National Guard units. .

Maybe Peter himself will be able to add some more this infomation.

Hi again–

WHAT!! “Jumpin’ Jacques” is ex-332FG? I had been dead sure the only surviving Tuskegee-connected aircraft was the T-6 Texan “Double Vee” that operates stateside. More info please on Mr Teichmann’s ’51…

S.

According to the Aeroplane article from November last year it is, and saw combat with the 15th Air Force in 1945, flying escort and ground-attack sorties over Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia.

Hi–

The Fort in “The Tuskegee Airmen” is Lone Star’s “Thunder Bird” with some of her markings covered over.

The ’51s included Steve Seghetti’s “Sparky”, again refinished for the role.

As WWII TV-flix go, HBO’s take on the Tuskegee saga is indeed quite decent…but I’d still like to see the long-mooted George Lucas theatrical version…

S.

Ahh, I thought it was “Thunderbird”, but wasn’t too sure! Thanks for that 🙂

Not a bad TV movie that, with some pretty well-known faces in it (Cuba Gooding Jr, Laurence Fishburne, John Lithgow, Mekhi Phifer).

Not sure about the Mustangs, Harvards or Stearman, but the ex-Charles Church Buchon N109GU (G-HUNN) appears in it. Haven’t seen the film in ages so can’t recall the ID of the B-17 that appears nearer the end.

Not available on Region 2 DVD, though 🙁
