It was an interesting programme…is it true that Easy Elsie is the ONLY 617 aircraft left from the Tirpitz raid???? What about the two that crashed in Russia…one was Ian Ross…and I’m sure there was another in Russian hands…I was told by someone that was recovering aircraft from Russia that they still existed…any truth in this.
Its the only confirmed one existing. Two were recovered of the four 9 Sqn and 617 Sqn aircraft that crashed in Russia and operated for a while, I don’t know their fates for sure, but I seem to recall reading one crashed.

It was a fairly good documentary. As for Easy Elsie, I tried for a few years to get her out.
I’ve just sent off some new correspondence to find out if things are still where I left them, and I’ve a few new angles to work if things come back positive. I’m trying one more time to get her recovered – if I can’t make it work this time I’ll shut up, sit down and resign myself to playing with Shackletons.

At least they didn’t “edit” the film 🙂

Why?
Assuming the “Why?” relates to Winkle Brown… Some years ago I was party to a concerted effort by a large chunk of the RAeS to get him knighted. We were warned off on the basis that he’d turned it down before and we should not further embarrass him. Although I don’t remember in detail, I do recall that we found the ‘official’ explanation less than entirely convincing. The impression I got, trying to read between the lines, was that he felt he’d only been doing his job and was thus not worthy of further honour. I think he’s been quoted publicly more than once as having that opinion, so perhaps we’d just encountered someone trying to make themselves look more important by adding some mystery to the subject.

I believe he has declined the honour on more than one occasion.
Why?
Of course we do not know his reasons but honours are prolific and arguably diminished as a result. It is very easy to say yes but more difficult to refuse and I greatly respect anyone whether for political or personal or reasons of principle feels unable to swim with the majority.

I think a quick search will bring up quite a few threads about the Lanc in Sweden!. It’s a well known wreck.
No tried that! Lanc + Sweden result = Zero. Must be another Forum!

In which case I respect him even more than I did.

Watched this, good programme, I was stunned by the fact that a Lanc is still in a bog in Sweden, That’s never come up on here.

I have wondered about that from time to time and given the way knighthoods are showered around like confetti often to the undeserving it occurred to me that Winkle Brown might have had the offer and declined it. If not it is extremely overdue.

I set mine too, haven’t had chance to view it yet.
With Eric Brown’s record I think a knighthood is ell deserved.

Interesting programme on 617 Sq. But I think they tried to put a bit too much in and it seemed a bit rushed. Still good to see this on mainstream TV. And hopefully more people know about E-Easy now!
Winkle Brown programme details here. hopefully lead to his Knighthood!

This coming Sunday there is a programme on Winkle Brown on BBC2, and on Monday the start of a series on BA, okay I know its not historic.

last week i listened to the australian dramatisation of AFTER the dams (recordings made in the 1950s) – a bit stilted in places but covered the main points of the history – gibson , cheshire , tait , faquier etc – well worth a listen !
i too have set my recorder for 21.00 this evening
