About ten tonight on Ch4 – We Were Soldiers (Sunday 6th August)
Well worth watching for a few minutes ground support scattered through the action.
Actually it is the only reason for watching what is a truly dreadful movie. No war movie cliche left out.
Mel Gibson as a far too wonderful to be believed US General. If they’d had him for real Hanoi would now be called McDonaldsville. Never puts a foot wrong, knows everything better than everybody else. You wonder how Holywood can make such cr@p when you consider the real outcome of that squalid little war. Doesn’t anybody there ever read a history book.
Touching scene where a cabbie is given a bunch of ‘envelopes’ to deliver around base housing and calls at Mrs Gibson’s home for directions. Almost redeems it. Er.. no, not really.

Was based on true events!!
In November 1965, 450 U.S. soldiers were dropped into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers.

I like We Were Soldiers, for no real reason. The scene with the envelopes is especially touching for me personally.
Will get in a couple of beers, order a chinese, then crack open the Band Of Brothers DVDs afterwards and make a night of it.
