I, for one, miss Ian Dury and wonder what he would have done if he’d been allowed those twelve years.
Reason to be cheerful? That he left a great musical / poetic legacy.

Wasn’t there a film about him fairly recently? I think he was played by Andy Serkis.
A cracking film, although it wasn’t well-received by the critics, and Andy Serkis puts in an eerily Dury-like performance.
It’s Andy Serkis’ voice, not Ian Dury’s, that you hear in the songs. They were re-recorded for the film.
It’s the same old Blockheads, though. 🙂

Seeing the amazing Norman Watt-Roy and Wilko Johnson supporting the Stranglers in Glasgow a couple of years ago re-awakened my love of Ian Dury and the Blockheads, not that I needed much encouragement!
Ian also played some good character parts in a few movies, too.
Thanks for the reminder Moggie…

Y’know, that thought did cross my mind the moment I hit the submit button!
…Still, all behind the privacy of closed doors eh? 😀

Knock me down wiv a Feather, Clever Trevor!
Don’t forget the input from his writing collaborator/musical arranger Chas Jankel and the multi-talented Blockheads (as much a cabaret/revue band as a rock/jazz ensemble ,who still play in various guises). The film with Andy Serkis is very convincing and very loud and the gentle character of Dury’s first wife Betty made an impression

Couldn’t agree more Moggy..
Ian Dury was a huge talent that is sadly missed. A good actor too! I seem to recall him in a BBC drama about the east end rag trade many moons ago, in which he played a good part.
Of course we have his legacy as a recording artist, whose lyrics were bordering on genius sometimes, but as you say, what would he have given us in the subsequent years? I always felt he didn’t get quite as much recognition as maybe he deserved.
Hard to believe it’s 12 years already. Thanks Moggy for the reminder. I’m off to dig out New Boots and Panties! 🙂
