Twentieth Century Defences in Warwickshire

This book has been mentioned this week in the local free rag (Leamington Observer)

Anyone own a copy?

There are a few photos in the newspaper, including the Battle HQ for Baginton. I thought no such thing existed, where is it?

Are there any other WW2 buildings still on the airfield?

Yes, the best way is via the village and then a footpath. Otherwise, you would have to cross the field and fences just opposite to the main gate to the hangar side of the field. Farmer would not be pleased! You could see the BHQ from the old tower if you knew where to look.

Thanks Atcham, I was in Baggy today test driving a new motor. The church is some way displaced from the airfield, about a 5-10 minute walk. Is it really nr there?

The Baginton Battle HQ is on the top of a ridge line just to the west of the airfield. Reach it via the village (near the church as I recall). It seems to have been one of the few built on the surface, rather than embedded. Unless, of course, it was once covered with earth.

Blue Robin,
Try http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/specColl/dob/.
This will give you access to the DoBDA (Defence of Britain Database & Archive). There are nearly 20,000 sites in the database (pillboxes, AA gun-sites, airfields, decoys, etc, etc, etc). From memory (when I was involved in some of the field-work) I think you can search the database by Counties. But I don’t know which historical county boundaries are used. Most of the data are absolutely correct, but there are some which look a bit strange – like a Heavy AA gun site in the grounds of Wexham Park Hospital (Geneva Convention?). And the site is so close to the buildings that when it fired it must have broken every window in the adjacent Ward!!!!
Have fun!
Rgds
