Twenty one injured as TAM Airbus hits severe turbulence

Twenty one people on an overnight flight from Miami to Sao Paulo were hurt, some of them badly, when their Airbus was thrown around by turbulence, the Brazilian airline involved said on Tuesday.

Nine of the injured were taken to hospital for treatment and three remained there for further care, the company TAM said in a statement.

It said the 21 hurt comprised of 16 passengers and five flight attendants on flight JJ 8095. The aircraft was carrying 154 people.

Media reported that two of those badly hurt suffered fractured femurs and other injuries, and gave accounts from other passengers who had been unbuckled when the plane ran into the rough patch of air.

‘I rose towards the roof and felt my feet floating. I started to scream. It was unworldly. I though the plane was going to fall and my time had come,’ one passenger, Marilda Torres, 56, told the G1 website.

Ms Torres, who suffered cuts to face, said she was going to sue TAM, arguing it should have detected the turbulence on the radar.

Does turbulance show on the type of radar used by airliners….I think not. Turbulance is avoided by forecasting and ‘ride reports’ from from airliners operating in the same area. Pilots change flight level and speed to improve ‘ride’ and passanger comfort.

Many aircraft weather radars have a turbulence detection mode. Turbulence associated with precipitation is detected using the doppler effect. What it cannot do, however, is detect clear air turbulence. There isn’t anything for the radar to detect.

Northern Brazil is known to have a violent patch of turbulence and often airliners are unable to avoid strong turbulence.
Flying from Europe to Argentina often I felt this hard turbulence and Im sure TAM did all they could to avoid the strong turbulence. TAM, in my opinion, are a trustworthy airline and I dont believe they should take the blame. People need to remain seated during turbulence!

We don´t simply know how we would react in such a critical moment.

I think I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty I know I wouldn’t be suing the airline if we hit turbulence! Then again, my seat belt is always on when I’m sat down anyway. :diablo:

People aren´t forced to know anything about aviation. While sueing the airline it´s pointless, I understand she is affected by the nasty event. We don´t simply know how we would react in such a critical moment.

I wonder why nobody has invented something to detect an prevent CATs. It´s that difficult?.

“Ms Torres, who suffered cuts to face, said she was going to sue TAM, arguing it should have detected the turbulence on the radar.”

Stupid, stupid, stupid, brain dead idiot of a person. Keep your damned seat belt on! It’s there for a reason. I hope this fool wastes a hell of a lot of money on trying to sue and gets nowhere. 😡

Slightly off topic, but a valid observation……
Whenever – and I cannot remember a time when this did not happen – an Airbus is involved in an incident, the press/TV always say “The Airbus they were travelling in……..”
If it’s a Boeing or Embraer etc. “The aircraft they were travelling in…..”

Is Airbus a victim of it’s own success?

As for seat belts, I’m an “On” kinda guy. I’ve done turbulance, and you only do it once unrestrained!

Until a process were you have to wear it compulsory at all times, i dont think you can really call people stupid for taking their seltbelt off when the sign has gone off??

I disagree completely. I’ve done around 220 commercial flights and I can’t remember not hearing a very clear ‘we recommend you keep your seatbelt fastened even when the sign is off’ announcement at the start. If you choose to ignore that warning, you’re stupid. It’s that simple. Why should the airline have to pay for this womans ignorance?

Paul

P.S. You can make a point without using multiple question marks. Using just one comes across much better and less like you’re ‘demanding’ an answer. 😉

The woman’s an idiot, she’ll probably try to sue everyone if an earthquake occured without warning, eventhough you cant predict them neither.

Sometimes people just need to sit and think before they speak.

People who are stupid enough to sue an airline because the plane hits turbulence are usually the kind of people stupid enough take their seat belt off as soon as the sign is switched off.

Paul

Hi Paul,

i understand what your saying, and i always leave my seatbelt on when seated on any flight due to this very fact..

However… how many non frequent flyer’s are out there who only go on a plane once a year at the most, on a summer holiday?

Many of these non-Freq’s trust the pilot’s judgment and the illuminated sign above their head.
If the seatbelt light is not on, most non-freq pax must think if the pilot has turned the seatbelt light off, it must be safe and dont need to wear it..

I think airline seatbelt policy should be like in a car, you should be forced to wear it while seated.

Maybe for example…… . the seatbelt sign is on all the time like the smoking sign, and then an additional light/sign which means no standing/walking/No going to the bathroom………. i dont know…. just a thought..

Until a process were you have to wear it compulsory at all times, i dont think you can really call people stupid for taking their seltbelt off when the sign has gone off??

Understand where im coming from or am i off the point here???

Going back on topic, This is happening more and more were people are getting hurt, but is not making the media therefore not becoming common knowledge.

Maybe she was just about to get up and go to the loo.:dev2:

Then that’s highly unfortunate timing. However, I suspect that wasn’t the case. People who are stupid enough to sue an airline because the plane hits turbulence are usually the kind of people stupid enough take their seat belt off as soon as the sign is switched off.
