Is there any official fallout of this thread? Searched google but couldn’t find any more up to date info. Is the wreckage in the US the real deal?

According to the FAA it is….But given the way Izthaki (sp?) swapped parts between different aircraft it’s possible that both contain parts of the original & neither are 100%…It would seem that both parties have parts from the time it spent in Israel.
*Some* P51’s have the serial # stamped on the longerons, but apparently that depends on where they were built.

Thanks for the info.
So who has 463864 then?
And what identity will the other mustang take on?
By: Arabella-Cox - 31st March 2025 at 13:30
What ever the identity, a refreshing colour scheme would be nice, rather than the usual 8th AF FG machines

According to the FAA the *more realer* one is the one up near Canada someplace (S Dakota?) & not the one at Chino.
I should say that is the FAA’s “current thinking”….. as there may be an appeal or something else in progress…

twilight tear
the photos posted are of the P51D twilight tear that was based at Duxford and now in Chino after a refurb

So this pile of ‘junk’ is now worth more as it is, than the artist formerly known as Twilight Tear 😮
Well, that kinda depends.. as there is apparently some case to be made that part of the junk pile is in fact part of the other one…. alledgedly.

I know i will sound stupid for asking this one but which is “N251L” and where is it based? i.e. is it the duxford one?
Sorry to be a pain 🙂

Yes, agree on N251L, but what about the one at Chino, what is it’s real number and what will it be reigstered as?

Sure would be nice to get this regristation and ID mess fixed once and for all. We know it is not the the ID on N251L. Shame to see such a beauty grounded for lack of proper paperwork.
??????
It has been sorted, as reported on here.
The FAA concluded that N251 was the real (or should that be, contains more of the original) Twilight tear & so can carry the USAAF S/N.

😮 So it’s not G-CBNM?:D
By: EN830 - 5th April 2010 at 17:24
It’s just a P51, many others are available.

oops
perhaps my eyes only saw the hard part & missed the very obvious
By: Adrian Barrell - 21st December 2009 at 12:18
Nothing wrong with your eyes, it does say P-51K but it also captions it as a sample data card and asks for one similar to the picture…..
By: Arabella-Cox - 21st December 2009 at 12:15
p51 data plate
it could be my eyes but if the data plate shown is the one in question i would swear it says p51 K
