Twin anti-collision lights on A330-300

Just been looking at this recent video, curtsey of FL350

http://www.flightlevel350.com/Aircraft_Various_Aircraft-Airline_Various_Airlines_Aviation_Video-11126.html

Now not to sure if it’s an illusion but pretty sure that the Qatar 330 has two anti collision lights on the top of the fuselage. Not seen this before on any other types apart from the L1011. Anybody care to explain, the only thing I can think of is that Qatar being based out of a region predominately made from a land mass of desert and this is a requirement. But then why do no other Arabian carries have this feature.

Rgds

it could be something as simple as the internal structure/systems get in the way meaning a light can’t be fitted on the centre line.

So not a reflection! Having seen the photos I did some more digging and found the ‘Two Upper Beacon Light details’ for A330s. Seems that Jet Airway’s first two a/c have one upper light, the rest of the fleet have 2 upper lights.

That’s indeed something I notice a few days ago. They now have dual light fitted on 330s, just like on the A380 (picture).
I first thought it was because of the huge fuselage diameter/obstruction on the A380… Maybe there’s a good reason…:p

Correct; But along with the two upper collision light the L-1011 had two lower anti-collision lights.

Indeed that’s what i meant..:D

except that there may be solid angles of obstructed visibility totaling not more than 0.5 steradians.

Steradians, were’nt they the one’s who have the gills behind the ears in Startrek 8 “The return of the gimbal driods”?

Not two but one

Cannot find any documentation regarding 2 upper beacon lights on any Airbus EXCEPT the A380. There’s no mention in the AMM, IPC or an SB that might have put in two instead of one.

Best guess a reflection of the one light!!!

Certainly looks that way, I think the reason is that whatever those things are stuck on the top of the fuselage at the front would obscure the view of a central top Anti Col light.

I could be wrong but I think those weird protrusions are for satellite TV? They certainly don’t look very aerodynamic!

The Anti Col light has to have enough lights to illuminate the horizontal plane of the airplane, except that there may be solid angles of obstructed visibility totaling not more than 0.5 steradians.

This is the only thing I can think of.
