Twin finned Wellington

Hi all

I’ve been reading the Action stations book on Cambridgeshire airfields and the section on Duxford mentions an unusual aircraft. Twin finned Wellington ‘II’ L4250 is described with a 40mm gun in a huge Dorsal turret and was at the Airfield between December ’41 & January ’42. Are there any Photos of this aircraft and what is the history of this aircraft when it left Duxford ?

Twin finned and ruddered Beau

Yep that’s the one Manta mate! :dev2:

Experimental twin finned and ruddered Beaufighter 😎 .

It should be in the next Issue of Classic Wing’s 😀 😉 , our fantastic downunder rival to the other world’s great aero mag’s(psst like flypast, sshhh:rolleyes: ).

If all’s going well at C.W. HQ it should appear in the Mystery aircraft section of the Mag. (G’ day DaveM2 and the big G:D )

They were alway’s trying to find way to make these bitche”s fly a little straighter and less swing on take off, how much it really help, I am not so sure,

But notice the other Bristol aircraft built after the Beau’s, a LOT had the twin fin/rud tail set up..

Was alway’s a bit of a hand full to fly the old Beau.

Yes we had a few built down here, my grandfather was a Raaf Erk, who served all round Oz, and Papua new guniea, and also worked at CAC Fisherman’s bend working on Beau’s and other aircraft.

Don’t think any twin tail Beau’s were built down here Manta, was ment to be a yank donk job at one point, I only wish they would put some Yank donk’s in one now, just to see one flying again.

I reckon the Griffon powered Beau, must have been a real snake in the air.

I thought the twin fin and rudder’s would have been for this aircraft, but the only picture I have seen of it, It’s a radial job, No Merlin’s or Griff’s.

That don’t mean they never tried the set up with the Griff’s or Merlin’s, just I have not read or sean anything on it, YET!!! 😀

Ok prob’s here’s Manta mate, I must get back to THE Royal Throne once more:rolleyes:

Ciao from the thunder box downunda :dev2: 😀 :p 😉

Wow,that’s an obscure one:)
Wasn’t it experimental when they were trying different things to stabilise the plane after trying more powerfull engines.

Don’t know if it was any thing to do with Australia as they had quite a few Beaufighters.
