Twin Mustang – where is it now?

Does anyone know the current whereabouts of the CAF Twin Mustang (44-65162). I believe it is in some kind of ownership dispute. It was last noted at San Diego Gillespie Field in 2002, awaiting restoration.

I will be visiting Gillespie Field in February next year, and just wondered if it was still there.

Just a question… was there ever an attempt made to build a “Twin-Spitfire”?

And no, I do not mean a Mossie!!

Twin Mustang

Yes the P-82 is back in Midland and was re-assembled for Airsho’ 05. Yes the ownership of this beauty is in dispute…. no secret there….. but here is an update on the aircraft…. While the P-82 work was underway at Breckenridge with Nelson Ezell and co., structural repairs were completed, new plumbing installed in the center section, and the gear was swung! Looks great! I also had a chance to inspect the aircraft while at Breck and was really amazed that despite all the years down at Harlingen, the airframe was in really good condition…..some light corrosion, but nothing at all like on the B-23. The big rebuild issue was and is going to be props… Ham Standard would make the left hand prop, but it was not going to be cheap… the original left hand rotation Aero Products prop just seems to not exist anymore (so far). I think that’s the problem, the CAF think they own it and the USAAF say THEY own it.
See post #7. I’ve read the same, or very similar at least.

Looks ready to fly? If CAF did the repair work or re-assemble the plane, they must be clear about the ownership of the plane

P82

It is in Midland. I have seen some pics of it pieced together for display at Midland. Here is a photo taken back in July.

In late 2004 I saw it at a well-known reestoration shop. It had been sent there by its “new” owner, then the USAF stepped in. As a legal cloud hung over the project, work naturally stopped (actually it hadn’t begun yet other than disassemby).

Because of the legal issues I was asked not to say where it was being stored but good news, it was (safe and dry indoors…more than I can say for the USAF F-82 at Lackland!!!).

If you like, I can talk to the shop and confirm whether it’s there or not and see if they know of any updates on the legal issue.

twin mustang owner?

The problem is over who actually owns the plane. The story I heard was that the CAF traded it for a P-38 or similar and after this was announced the U.S. air force stepped in and claimed that the plane was only loaned to the CAF and that they now wanted their loan back.Thats the last I heard other than it was headed for court. thats all I know. Tim. 😮

Hi,

those pics were posted in a modelling forum a couple of months ago, and they were taken a few weeks before, IIRC:

Apparently very little restoration work has been done and it currently has fibre glass props, It is now situated at Midland.
