Two aircraft seats, possibly WW2 vintage – Identification please.

Hi

I have 2 aircraft seats, both probably WW2 era.

Does anyone know what they are from?

Thanks….

The green seat is the same as the one in a T-6 I flew. They had either round or flat side bars. The P-51 I was in had a flat sheet metal seat that was riveted together. I was something like you see in a hot rod car. If you’re interested in getting rid of the green seat, let me know. I may know someone who can use it. Thanks, Tom

😉

There is a head rest fitted above and behind the seat affixed to armour plate. The tubular holes pick up on seat rails which are fixed to the floor (actually the top of the wing, technically) and the handle adjusts the height. The T-6 also used a similar seat – the attachments for both seats are virtually identical, apart from the headrest. Google P-51 Mustang seat to see what I mean

Having done plenty of aeros in a T-6 I can confirm, you don’t need a headrest the inertia reel seatbelts are pretty effective and the cockpit is very comfortable (if a bit hot on warm days)

Doh! Wrong!

It was a guess, but I thought that the Mustang would have a higher-backed seat because it was reclined to resist the effects of ‘g’ in combat turns; please tell me there was some sort of head-rest fitted above this seat?

The Fairey Battle seat is the silver one yes?

Not sure, my guess would be the green one?

Aircraft seats aren’t really my thing…..I’m more of an engine man! 🙂

Hi rowin_aboat. Welcome to our Madhouse. The Battle is the B&W pic. With that green house canopy I’d not want to spend long in one on a sunny day even when not being attacked.

Sorry Wa$

I had been having a stressful morning too and was probably overly sensitive, my apologies for making assumptions and taking your words personally.
Please accept my respect and admiration.

The Fairey Battle seat is the silver one yes?

Thank you for the welcome 🙂
I plan on coming to as many events and getting to know as many people on here as possible – mainly so I can take wicked photos of all your stuff 🙂

Nameste….

I wasn’t offended by your post and I’m sorry if my reply came across a little harsh (I was pushed for time) but the seats looked interesting and I didn’t want your first post to be deleted before they had been identified for you.

Your late father was not far wrong about the seats and he certainly saved some interesting pieces of history; the Fairey Battle seat in particular is an important artefact and it would be a fitting tribute to him if it were to find its way into a restoration project.

I appreciate that you were only asking for identification but even on eBay listing an ‘ejector seat’ from a Spitfire will lose you a lot of bidders! Sorry again if my comments came across the wrong way but it is difficult to get the ‘tone’ right when writing a quick reply.

Once again, welcome to the forum! 🙂

Sorry mate, I was told my my dad they were from either spitfire or hurricane before he passed over and he said they were the seats from the plane – or the seat part with no ejector mechanism, I’m not an aviation specialist, hence the question here.

Sorry if my post offended you, it was not intended and your response was a little harsh.

Have a nice day 🙂

They are collectable items to aviation enthusiast and will have some monetary value (and I dont know what that may be) so please dont dump them in a skip to be lost for ever! Good luck!

Don’t know what they are from but they are NOT ejector seats.

Also blatant ‘commercialism’ is frowned upon here; I’d remove any references (edit post) to selling them, eBay and valuations…

…just ask what they are and somebody will probably know. Welcome to the forum! 😉

Thanks mate 🙂

First one could be Battle the second looks like Mustang- certainly American and a Warren McArthur type I think.

TT

Could you clarify TT what is “battle” and “Mustang” Sorry I’m a total retard when it comes to plane stuff, just trying to clear the junk dad left and work out whats rubbish and whats maybe collectable.

THANK YOU ALL 🙂 OXO
