Two dead in County Galway Plane Crash

Two people have been killed and seven injured after a plane crash in County Galway.
It is understood an eight-seater single engine plane missed the runway at Aerphort na Minna in Connemara.

The pilot and eight passengers were airlifted to hospital, where two later died. Two are critically ill.

It is understood the group were businessmen on their way back after a trial flight to the Aran islands. An investigation is under way.

It is understood three people had to be cut from the wreckage. All the injured have been taken to Galway Regional Hospital.

The scene of the crash is about 25 miles west of Galway city.

A coastguard spokeswoman said the small aircraft, a Cessna 208D, was making a return trip from Inishmaan, an island off the Galway coast.

The flight would have normally taken about seven minutes.

An eyewitness said: “The front of the plane is totally destroyed.

“One wing was sheared off and is lying on top of the plane.”

Aerphort na Minna is the main airport for Aer Arann planes, serving the Aran Islands.

The plane is understood to be a charter plane and not one of the Aer Arann fleet.

The plane was on the N register but owned by an Irish company. The pilot was Captain Matt Masterson from County Dublin.

From what the local news is saying the people onboard were Businessmen who were considering opening a new air link to compete with Aer Arann. It would appear this was their first return flight to get an idea of if it was viable.
