Two-seat Hurricane moves to new operator at White Waltham

The unique 2-seat Hurricane has moved on from its previous home at Biggin Hill, where surprisingly despite its rarity it was not necessarily viewed as more desirable than the Spitfire.

”Hurricane Heritage offers flight experiences in the world’s only two seat Hurricane, and our Mk2B Harvard.  A range of flights is available, starting with a 20-minute Harvard experience, all the way up to 65-minutes in the 2-seat Hurricane – the typical length of a sortie in WWII.”

This expands on the existing ‘fly with a Hurricane” Harvard flights already offered at WW with James Brown’s single seater.

”Once airborne you’ll be joined by Hawker Hurricane R4118, the only surviving Hurricane to have taken part in The Battle of Britain, and one of the most original British fighters from WWII still in airworthy condition today.”

Let’s hope no one is contemplating turning it back into a single seater !  When you add it up, the fighter rides business must be putting a lot of money into the historic aircraft business.  Say 7 Spitfires each doing perhaps (guess) 200 trips a year at £2,700 would be on the way to £4 million a year   That is great for pilot currency !

I would be surprised if currency were a factor here,  as BHHH have a number of pilots very current on merlin -engined fighters, and the two types must be very closely matched in handling characteristics.

I think the bottom line is that it was simply not very popular, because ‘Spitfire’ is the gold-standard, the jewel in the crown,  the ultimate… the one historic type that is logged in the public consciousness.

If you tell people you flew in a Spitfire they go ‘Wow !’

If you say you flew in a Hurricane, they go ‘ What’s that? ”

Nevertheless, it is a exciting opportunity and hopefully, the operation will be a great success.

Seems odd that BHHH didn’t make more of it. Guess keeping pilot currency on the type was an issue?
