My condolences to the family’s involved.
But what i find absolutly disgusting is that the unit being attacked called in for air support, only to be told that it was committed elsewhere and it eventully turned up 2hrs later.
What ever your opinion on the troop comittments in Afghanistan be it right or wrong..surely the least they deserve is proper backup from air or land, which they clearly are not getting at the moment. And from what i have read in the newspapers, the MOD through the emergency procurement committee has ordered a batch of Armoured personel carriers from a company in Austria that will sell licences for them to be built in the UK for use in Afghanistan and Iraq. The first batch will be ready by late 2007, with the remaining arriving in 2008. But the real kick in the groin is that a company in Australia builds a vehicle along the same specs, and they can be delivered within 4-6 weeks!!!
I apologise to the mods for thread creep. but it really annoys me ( i would like to use stronger language) that after years of defence budget cuts, where things are being cut to the bone, that the goverment commits troops to war zones without the proper equipment needed to carry out there jobs (Lack of body armour, standard issue rifles that have well publicised problems-and the fix cost more money than buying in M16’s or Steyer AUGS, Radio’s that only work to “line of Sight” and communications carried out by Satphone or mobile phone)

My condolences to the families of the two British soldiers who were killed in yesterdays rocket attack.
This could be a war that will drag on for a long time to come and as much as it would appear the coalition formed by the Americans, the Brits and the Canucks might have the upper hand, I would agree that they may not be pushing as hard as they could in order to negate the influence of the Taleban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. I understand that these two organizations may have a strong hold over these people, but I reckon it could be broken in due time. But in order for this happen, one country in particular will have to become a team player rather than a lone ranger. And what might be more important is the way American forces are perceived in this region. They need to give themselves the notion that they are here to assist the people of Afghanistan rather than to occupy the country as most believe they are doing.

Afghanistan presents a prime location to monitor the activities of Russia aswell as China.
Its a known fact that the Central Asian states were eager to supply oil which goes through Afghanistan Pakistan to the Sea. China would be the prime beneficiary of that deal. So what you do? You want to stop China march to domination, So US along with Brition come and sits in Afghanistan key area which could have been claimed all other areas.
Please keep the 9/11 myth to ur self as nobody with logics buys it.

To what end? So that British soilders can be hated as much by the locals as American troops?
Look at the casaulty figures for the two forces and you will see the benefit of the British ‘hearts and minds’ tactic.
Your reaction is exactly what the terrorists want – for the British army to loose its professionalism and start going out seeking to get retribution. That’ll turn the local people against you, for every insurgent you kill, ten more will rise up to take his place, and if that happens, then your have already lost.

i think its time to stop with the hearts and minds lark and take the fight to the enemy!!

They might be providing the camps and training but it’s a very close US
ally that provides the funding (and many of the volunteers) for the camps.
This is why the war on terror is idiotic and will never end.
instead of drying the swamp they squat at the mosquitoes one at a time.
Well, I think that there are at least two close US allies that are producing the bulk of volunteers, and another very close US ally is one of the main reasons why these volunteers are trying to target the US.
There are more ‘swamps’ to drain then one might think at a casual glance.
The American need to be at the centre of everything has its drawbacks, and all too often, it is others that pay the price, as this tragic case demonstrates.
Anyways, if the UK must follow the US into all of its wars, it needs to stop penny pinching when it comes to kit. Far too many lives have been lost already as a result of a lack or substandard kit.

Afghanistan was an actual just war. It had the Taliban and Pak ISI run camps which were acting as terror factories for the bulk of Islamist terrorists. Iraq in comparison – well, lets let history be the judge of that.

If you dont clean up the mess today, it will come back and strike you with a vengeance much later on.
The London tube bombings will be a minor footnote in comparison. Before your boys and the US went in, and ISAF, the Taliban and ISI were using Afghanistan as one vast training camp for their jihadis. That is no longer the case.
Hang in there, and good will come of it.
Cut and run, and you will be back, after much worse, later on.
That’s a good point………….I do think that there is more to it that just fighting terror………..like Iraq has oil………..I wonder what Afganistan has that we and America need so badly 🙁 🙁 🙁

Personally, I don’t know why our troops are there……..why not bring our boys home and let the bloody taliban blow each other up……….I hope they go to hell!!!!!!
Why is it that whenever there is a war somewhere in the world, the USA has to get involved and wherever the USA goes, so do we it seems. They blow it up and we clean up the mess afterwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My good friend Jamie went over there when he was 17 and has experienced things that even he couldn’t tell me…………..for what??????
I hope those lads rest in peace………..they won’t be forgotten and nor will anyone else who has died or survived 🙂 🙂 🙂
