Romania has acquired two Type 22 frigates from the UK in 2004 (formerly in the R Navy). One of it, renamed Regina Maria(Queen Mary) is now in the UK and the Romanian crew is trained there. The two frigates will be the most modern in the Romanian inventory along an old modified destroyer (Marasesti class) which has a SSM and air defence capacity and some Tetal corvettes.
Romania intends to change the weapons system on these frigates and is thinking about different options. Its requirements are
a) rapid reaction force compatible with NAto
b) patrol in the Black sea and protection of disputed oil fields in the regon
c) support of foreign operations of peacekeeping missions (Romania has soldiers in Irak and Afghanistan,).
I have two questions
a) what were the weapons systems installed on the Type 22 were they belonged to the Royal Navy ? I suppose helicopters, Sea Wolf, Exocet ??? Is that correct ?
b) what would be the best solution to arm these frigates for the missions required by the Romanian navy.
