Type 305 Turret Spitfire

Doing a little investigation into this rare Spitfire. A two seat version with a Turret did this aircraft make it to prototype stage? are there are pictures or drawings around ?

Which brings us smartly back to jolly old F.37/35 again!;)
I suppose it must have been a better idea to run with the higher performing and available for production with less changes Spitfire (over the Defiant) with the cannon wing.

Not sure if you’ve seen this thread from a week or so ago, http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=113822
It contains good info on the turret idea and the various Defiant proposals.

Looks like a BP Defiant I wonder how they have performed as a fixed Gun fighter without the turret ?

The prototype Defiant, having first flown without the turret fitted, had the turret removed again in 1940 for trials to see how a single-seater, fixed gun version might perform. The Spit and Hurri were seen as adequate at the time, so the single seat Defiant wasn’t proceeded with.

Not to be taken seriously.

I did several versions of the 305, one was updated to BoB standard in 19 squadron markings with later exhaust and normal rads etc. This one here has been modded with the DH 3 blade propeller and a tail wheel.

The 312 is the next Spitfire design study that I can find, it was the cannon armed wing variant to spec F.37/35 that I mentioned above – again not built, but I would assume led to the cannon armed production Spitfires.

On the site linked to by Zebedee there is mention of a Supermarine 306, Atlantic Mail Boat with four RR Vulture engines which was a 1935 design study.

Thanks, I have found quite a bit in the Eric B Morgan Spitfire Bible its seems as you say it never made it to prototype, there are some good drawings in there and several pages on the subject.

As an aside was there a Spitfire type 306 ? its not in the listing’s i have but not sure if they are complete.

It didn’t make it to the prototype stage, the only drawing I’ve seen of it on the ‘net is this, http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/attachments/personal-gallery/128937d1271813861-fantasy-aircraft-full-series-supermarine-type-305.jpg. I’m always a little bit wary of the secret projects/fantasy stuff though, people seem to get carried away and blur myth with reality a bit.

The drawing is based on one of three good illustrations and description of the VS305 on pages 39-42 of ‘Spitfire – The History’ book

What made it different to the Roc, Defiant, and Hotspur, the last three of which were designed to the same F.9/35 spec (Demon replacement), was the fact that the turret was remotely controlled.
Be intrigueing to know if it reached a mock-up stage, but my understanding was that it was only ever a design study with Vickers Supermarine, the cannon specification of F.37/35 seemed to have rendered the design and idea obsolete.

Depending how keen you are to know more, I could scan the pages in the book for you.
