Type 45 to put to sea without missiles

HMS Daring is supposed to go into service in December 2009, but won’t receive missiles until mid-2011. I guess she’ll have to stay close to a colonial AEGIS for protection. 😮

Long trials such as these exist to justify the jobs of a lot of pen pushers in peacetime. If Daring was required for combat tomorrow the missiles would be cleared for use practically overnight. Look at what was achieved in 1982. In wartime, the Beaureaucrats are the first casualties! In the meantime the trials are a job creation and sustainment scheme for the boffins and other support staff.

Daring has her missiles, what she doesn’t have is a fully verified system.

Daring will concentrate on ship system trials till early 2011, Dauntless will fire the first Sea Viper in late 2010, Daring is planned to follow in early 2011 and deploy shortly after. In an emergency they could bring the system into service earlier.

Nothing unusual about extended ship trials on the first of class. Also they’ll be getting CEC in 2014, which is good news.
