I must have been asleep, but someone today said the RAFM Hawker Typhoon was off to Canada. If so, I am shocked as this aircraft is unique and one of our crown jewels IMHO….anyone know what is happening and for how long. Sorry if this has already been discussed but I had not seen it.

Its highly appropriate that aircraft flown by Commonwealth pilots are loaned out to other countries of the union.
I do agree! Could we Aussies borrow the Halifax for a bit, please? We’ll tidy it up for you, and all!
Cheers,
Matt

Oh ! for heaven’s sake! This forum just gets more bizarre by the day!
Indeed – the Tempest did after all have an extensive restoration a few years back, and there is a rather nice Tempest 2 in the main building.

Glad to see it’s got some squadron codes at last. While perhaps (?) not correct for that particular airframe, I always felt something was missing as it was, in Hendon.
It looks great outside in the daylight too.
Enjoy it guys!

Its great to see the Typhoon get some attention, the new paint somehow shows up the badly fitting ‘homemade’ cowlings and dodgy spinner. I don’t think it ever had a lick of paint from the moment it went in. I get the feeling that this aircraft and the Tempest are not well regarded in the RAF museum [ I stand to be corrected ] with the Tempest having disappeared into the roof as target tug I wonder if it would be better for them to think perhaps about a swop to another museum that perhaps appreciated their respective types service history?
With luck, when it returns from Canada, it’ll go to into the workshop and receive some much needed TLC.

What happened to “this is unique and should not go out of the country”?
Well, unlike a politician or a bigot, I can and know when I am wrong! My first reponse was one of surprise. We are all entitled to change minds and indeed, make mistakes. I fully understand the sacrifice by Canada and other Commonwealth countries. See my post No.45 to see my initial response had mellowed back then…..so much for aviation discussion!
I am so sorry, my change of stance caused you distress Mike!

Cadman -the Canadians have already done a First World War type loan with their Snipe – ‘During 1970, E6938 was displayed at the Royal Airforce College,
Cranwell. and at the Science Museum in London, England’

Looks as if the Hawker Typhoon will be the only Typhoon that the Canadians flew

Very happy to see this sort of temporary exchange of exhibits. Lets hope we get to see something from “over the sea”, maybe a first world war type ?
Although with the cost in restoration and transport already budgeted for, it was a great shame that the Typhoon could not have been presented at Duxford’s D-Day airshow or event transported to France and displayed at Caen.

I guess we will never know to what extent (if any) the airframe was damaged in the move: (now it has been repainted) be interesting to see if they repaint it on it’s return!

It’s an aerodynamic cowling over the stubs, Peter. Though I guess it would have soon blackened in service.

But.. they painted over the exhausts…….

It looks as though it’s had a lick of paint too. Now wearing 440 squadron codes as 18-T
Indeed.
