U2 over UK?

Spotting a pic of a U2 on the BBC today I was reminded about an aircraft I didn’t recognise that I spotted from Newbury on Saturday the 6th of September this year.

It was high in a hazy sky so I didn’t get a good view at all, but it appeared to have long straight wings, a very long pod on each wing close in to the fuselage, and a straight tailplane. The rear fuselage and tailplane appeared to be much lighter in colour than the rest of the plane, though it was so hazy it could have been any colour. No contrail to tell me how many engines. Lots of airliners about, but this one stuck out as it was such a different shape. Flying pretty much due South.

The only thing I can think of is that it was a U2… I guess no-one is going to tell me yes or no, because I doubt the US are saying whether or where they’ve been flying! Anyone else spot it?

Adrian
