Uganda Police Air Wing 1965-67.

I was an Engineer with this unit during this period. We operated the following A/C, Cessna 180, Piper Aztec, DH. Caribou, ( Furnished interior for President Obote ), 2 Scout Helicopters ( 5XUUW and 5XUUW ). I hear 1 Scout survives ?
Myself and two other engineers towed 1 Scout from Northern Uganda back to Entebbe after engine problems, with a Landrover !! Must be some sort of record ? At the time the Isreali Air force were training Ugandans on the Fouga Magister.
Idi Amin would not fit in the cockpit 🙂 Bill Hutchings was the CO., ” Stash ” Wojaskik ? and ” Jan ” Jankowski ) Ex Polish Air force, ( WW2 Spitfires ! ) were two of the pilots. Vic Vize was Chief Eng, Laurie Aldridge Eng. ( Ex EAA ),
Bob Cowan Eng. and Joe ? ( Elect ) Ex RAF. Joe Clixby was the Scout Rep.
Most of us left when Idi Amin came to power 🙂 Can’t remember the other A/C registration numbers 🙁 Great days, the last of colonialists in Uganda 🙂
Anyone out there who served there ? cya 🙂

Thanks – the first one was one of the photos I remember, but there was also one of the “banana” aircraft with the door still “attached”!! I was in Downsview in 1975 doing a Twin Otter Mx course so it might have been a personal photo of one of the instructors.

At least the old girl got a lot of different flying – bet she could tell a tale or two!!

Reading this thread about the Scouts suggests that the crashed aircraft also returned to the UK as it seems unlikely the one at Everetts could have been so well restored. I know it was Autair who originally bought the Uganda Scout….they had very close contact with Africa.
It was then sold I believe to a Jim Wilkie but was then moved on again.

I remember seeing a photo of the DHC Turbo Beaver crushed by the hangar door a long time ago!! – I don’t seem to be able to find it on the Tinternet – so must have been in one of my books.

Here is a link to the same aircraft

Uganda Police Airwing 1967- 1971

😉 I joined the Airwing in September 1967 thru to Sept 1971 as ‘sparks’ – the radio guy was a Ugandan who eventually became CEO of Uganda Airlines! The DHC Caribou (5X-AAB?) was fairly new & generally flown by Jankowski & Bill Hutchings. Vic was Chief Engineer + Sid Leicester( Ex West Africa) + Bob Cowan + Bob (?)
I do have some VHS which I will dig out – unfortunely my daughter seems to have most of the B&W photos in UK but I do have some colour transparancies which again need uploading.
I remember the return of the Kabaka well – a Boeing 707 (BUA or its sucessor) escorted by Fouga Magister’s. The Bell 205 was a recent addition and I remember the morticians being on active duty as the daily vibration didn’t do the body much good- bearing in mind he’d been interred in the UK for 4-5 years! I did have some super 8 of the Kings Drummers at the welcome parade at Entebbe airport but the sound still raises the hackles on my neck when I picture it all.
The fleet by the time I left was 2 off C180- Aztec UBJ – Scout UUX (I can supply some info re the UUW accident in which Jan was killed)- 1 off DHCTurbo Beaver – 1off Twin Otter – 1off DHC Caribou – 2off Jet Ranger – 1off Bell 205 – 1off Bell 212 The most eclectic mix I ever worked on!
Regards to old comrades
Mike

In the late 1990’s there were the very smashed up remnants of a Westland Scout helicopter with a 5X- registration prefix dumped at Deopham Green airfield in Norfolk. The colour scheme was pale blue and white with titles on the very broken tail boom. It was little more than scrap. I did have a look for the remains a year or two ago but to no avail and I suspect they’ve been disposed of.

Hello bleeming,

I just got back from a quick visit to UK to visit my family and found this photo of the Uganda Police Airwing in one of our albums. Taken in Dec 1966.

Army Air Corps pilots – training

Do you know if any serving AAC pilots went to Uganda in April/May 1975 to carry out recurrent training on Scouts ? I have some good evidence for this, but it is not in their log books, presumably because of some political sensitivities?

Barry thank you very much for the info – I’m sure the Air Wing was a great place to be then, I have very fond memories of school and adventures in Entebbe and Uganda! As kids we built tree houses on the shores of Lake Victoria, chased snakes, collected chameleons and flying bats and wandered everywhere freely and had a real outdoors life. We all felt safe there. Having said that, I do now remember my Dad keeping a Thomson machine gun under his bed, and our dog was an ex-police doberman whom we adored! I have my fathers wartime log books and I will post an interesting photo of his wheels up landing in a Vampire jet in Indochina, with a hasty take-off to avoid the encroaching rebels! Good to talk with you. Regards, Andy

Hello Ivan, Thanks for that. That photo in a barn looks like it is being readied for painting, which may tie in with the current picture on Barnstormers.com, except that when I first saw it the colour scheme did not seem as I remember it but then that was many yaers ago!!! Regards, Andy

I saw 5X-UUX in Dick Everett’s yard at Sproughton Suffolk a couple of years ago. If you go to Eurodemobbed website and work your way through to the location you’ll find a photo of it.
Hope this helps Ivan

Yak sha mash Andy, Yes I remember your father well 🙂 We had a great Police Air Wing until Idi Amin came and destroyed the country 🙁 I flew with your father a few times, once as co pilot in the Caribou 🙂 I presume he was killed in 5XUUW. That must have been after I left Uganda. I also remember Stash, a chap from Poland informed me of his passing, aged 93 ! Very well known in UK and Poland. After Uganda I went to Oman, then to Cargolux, in Luxembourg, servicing CL44, DC8, 707, and 747 a/c. Then to Australia ( where I live ) as LAME supervisor on 747 overhaul. My eldest son was a pilot with MBA in PNG ( now a film producer in Tokyo 🙂 Restore Austin cars now 🙂 and play golf 🙂 Regards, Barry.

Uganda.

Hello Bleeming,
I was just searching through Barnstormers and came acrossthe Scout helicopter 5X-UUX that is for sale in England at the moment. Then came across this site and your post which was unexpected as I grew up in Entebbe during those years as my Dad was Lesczek “Jan” Jankowski, who flew the Scout and Caribou and Aztec in Uganda in those same years as you were there. I remember as a child going up in all 3 of those machines at one time or another. The sad ending was that my father was killed in a flying accident in Uganda in September 1967, of which I know little about, and would like to know more if you have any light to shed on this……I understood it to have been in one of the Scouts? When you look up the whereabouts of the 2 Scouts one apparently is preserved (where?) and the other was returned to England (where?). Maybe this one on Barnstormers.com is the UK returned one? Look forward to any info you may have here! Best Regards, Andy.
