Ugliest Aircraft.

Seeing as Stormbird has run a few threads on unusual aircraft and the one on the Short Seamew has started to discuss ugly aircraft I thought we might have a go at a most ugly thread.
Posts will ideally have a photograph to help substantiate the claim.
Mine first:-
Siemans-Schuckert Dr.I.
I think the idea was to eliminate rotary torgue by having the rotaries canceling each other out.
Anyway it’s ugly and I love it.
I actually intend to build a model of it eventually.
Cheers
Andy 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

thank’s guy’s

When Dave ask me to name them,
I had a huge pile of note’s and quickly grabbed then and named them, I did realise latter it was the Don, but forgot to go back and fix it, as the thread had moved on again, a thousand appolgy’s Dear SIR’S 😀 😀 😀

This is still my uglyest French prop job of all time,

Some of the Russian job’s of yesteryear’s were a bit rough too!!!

But she is still a true Farman flag ship :p :p .

But what is the oldest uglest jet  .

Another angle of this aeronautical piece of Vogon Poetry… The other one is a modified An-2 called Lala-1. It’s primary task was to test the engine configuration for the M-15, but i think it was also an ugliness testbed.

Anyone disagree in giving the friendly people of PZL-Mielec in Poland the Aviation Ugliness Award?

I do, think it looks rather nice actually

The three ugliest (and worst) airplanes of all time are definatly the Spitfire, Hurricane and Sea Fury.
That should get the people saying P-51 screaming!

“Vogon Poetry” 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

I’m not quite convinced about the award, some of the thirties French designs were truly gruesome.

We Swiss are also famous for ugly aircraft – remember the workhorse and para-dropper Pilatus PC-6 Turbo Porter !

Here’s the first Pilatus produced model – the SB2 Pelikan…..

not very attractive I’d say.

I know I said anybody’s entitled to an off day but there are limits. That’s horrible!

One that should definately have been mentioned: the PZL M15 Belfegor. I think it’s the only jet biplane ever to enter production. It was intended to replace the An-2 as a cropsprayer on the Eastern side of the Iron Curtain, but there was a number of reasons why it never became a success. One of those reasons was undoubtedly aestethic.

No matter from which angle it’s seen, new forms of hideousness keep popping up. A truely remarkable achievement!

The Don’s not particularly ugly, but it was certainly useless.

As ‘ugly’ is a subjective thing, I’ll stick with what I like (Buchons etc) and yah boo sucks to those who don’t like it. It’s often overlooked that the Buchon, loved or unloved, flies and flew for so long because of its engine. 🙂

Looks a lot better from the side than the ‘full frontal’ view above.

Not exactly de Havillands finest hour!

De Havilland Don

I say, chaps, that’s a bit mean, I can think of at least a hundred other aircraft that are uglier than the Don (mostly French and American, by the way).

I wouldn’t say the Balliol was in anyway beautiful, but he’s right, it’s a Don and it’s an eyesore.

On 10 June Stormbird 262 supplied four photos and stated the fourth one was a Boulton Paul Balliol. The Balliol was a much more beautiful aircraft. This is actually a DH.93 Don.

….. Avro Bison …….. Blackburn Dart…… Vickers Vernon …. Westland Walrus.

Give me an old chair leg, a Stanley knife and a decent drawing of any one of them and I’ll play happily for weeks. Ugly aircraft make the best models.

Though I agree in principle about the overall general ugliness of French aircraft (it also applies to most of their cars too!), this page alone demonstrates they were not alone in ugly designs
http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/milestones-of-flight/aircraft/1922.html

I was only looking for a shot of the Avro Bison and found a swag of uglies togther with it – Blackburn Dart, Vickers Vernon and Westland Walrus, all as ugly as the Bison. Hard to believe these same companies came up with the likes of the lovely Wellington, Whirlwind fighter, Baffin and Lancaster, not to mention the Anson and by proxy the loveliest of all, the Spitfire.

Evangel 4500

Googled up a picture of the Evangel 4500 (see post #69) from one of my favourite resources, the Aerofiles web site – if it was American and flew, it’ll be there somewhere! Not necessarily with a picture, though.
