Hello! New User here! Just wondering if anyone could explain the current attitude of UK airports to aviation enthusiasts? I nearly got arrested at Cardiff Airport for simply trying to video the front of the airport at the beginning of my holiday! I was also told in Bristol that I cannot use a video camera within the airport complex. Heathrow is making it increasingly difficult to view aircraft movements. I am in Germany at the moment and am a regular visitor to Frankfurt Airport. Here you can get so close to the aircraft on the visitors terrace that you can almost touch them. I went to visit a friend in Hannover as well & you could also go onto a terrace to watch aircraft movements. Also, in both airports, there are no restrictions on still photos or video cameras. Surely having enthusiasts to the airport is good? Don’t we go & spend money there on food & drink or on other things? I would have thought that since September 11th the airports would want to encourage people there. I simply cannot understand why the UK airports are driving us away!

It’s not just in the UK, Hand… the terrace at BSL has been shut for ages because the French are worried about something or other… It only used to be shut when the Republique Francaise A310’s were in, but they’ve been shut since 9/11 😡Not that it makes any difference anyway, as I can stand about a hundred meters from teh runway at teh spot where I take my pics, and there’s no police anywhere near for miles…
I think you’re right. I have the feeling that the French Authorities have some kind of “Terrorism Laxity”. I don’t think it is better.

It’s extremely difficult trying to get a legitimate TV camera into an airport these days, let alone a home video one.

Well , first of all , welcome on board.
I suspect that this UK airport attitude is just a kind of “terrorism paranoia”.

I have never visited Bristol or Cardiff, however I do know that Bristols attitude to things is better than BAA’s. There is a viewing enclosure somewhere near RWY09. Most people in the UK don’t like video cameras within any kind of business. Some stupid kind of phobia that the results will end up on TV and portray them in a bad light!
Birmingham and Manchester airports have done a great deal of work supporting aviation enthusiasts, and are very “spotter friendly” however the BAA airports not so. Don’t worry though, a campaign is already underway to make them change their minds!
They told me I couldn’t use my video camera for “security reasons”. This seems to be an excuse for everything at airports nowadays. I do agree with you about BHX & MAN though. I study in Salford & so go to MAN regularly & never have any problems there! Btw thanks for the welcomes everyone!

Because in the UK, they obviously suspect people with Video Cameras to be terrorists.
But welcome to the forum anyway! 😎
