G’day
With all of these cockpits for sale at the moment I am seriously considering buying one. Can someone please enlighten me on whether an export permit is required, where and how do you get one and any other useful hints. Last time I bought a cockpit the company involved arranged all paperwork so I don’t actually know what they did (if anything).

We recently used a UK based shipping agent to get our T4 Canopy here.
The only issues we had were with AQIS who inpounded it for fumigation of the wooden box etc.

Having had a JP4 impounded at Felixstowe en route to Tas I would say get an export licence. When i had problems about 12 years ago they were issued by the DTI. They take bloody ages and you will never speak to the same person twice, if you can understand them, as they all seem to come from outer space!!
Your best bet is to get a shipping agent to deal with the whole thing it may cost a few quid but it will save you hours and hours of telephone calls.
I eventually sent the JP4 followed by a Hunter T8 and 3 Chippys at least one of which Rob Edginton ferried to the mainland via Flinders? island.

Only Historic if it is over 50 years old.
If it is over 50 yrs, it may need a cultural export license, but in the case of a cockpit only, it is really aircraft parts rather than anything else.
I think you will need a standard license however.

Edit: this page gives lots of hyperlinks for all aspects of export control, including the Department for Business (or whatever its called now). This is where you need to be for export licencing, not with HMRC.

Surely someone has exported something? Any pearls of wisdom out there? This is a very serious request, I have emailed HM customs but am yet to receive a reply.

Never tried to move something out of the UK, always ‘in-bound’ and I suspect it might depend on it’s source of original manufacture i.e. inside the UK, EU or outside of those areas! 🙂
