I believe there are many routes still to be taken up that would be successful given the correct type and frequency, like the following…
Durham Tees Valley – Stansted
Leeds – London City
Doncaster – Aberdeen
Doncaster – Edinburgh
Newquay – Liverpool
Most of these routes would be perfect for a new domestic airline, particularly using the likes of ATR42/72 aircraft.
What do you lot think??

That would be good, seeings as Jet2 already have a LGW-MAN service, could defo see them expanding from there…they would be even better if they decided to operate low-cost services to TFS and other such destinations from LGW, as this would be good competition against the other charter carriers (Monarch, Excel, First Choice, etc…)
I have a feeling Jet2 are dropping Manchester-Gatwick, I was looking for a flight in December, and a note came up saying route did not operate after some time in October. I’d like to see a Liverpool Gatwick route by a loco, or poss even Liverpool-Southend as this airport is gearing itself up to serve London with a new train station openning there soon. Im not sure if the runway length could cope with EZY or FR’s aircraft ?
VLM who run LPL-LCY seem to be struggling a bit, I don’t think they capture much leisure business as they tend to be a bit expensive compared to rail. Short domestic hops must have quick airport transits, Jet2 using Manchester Terminal one and Gatwick South are at a dissadvantage due to the lengthy queues at check-ins, security & being bussed at Manchester. I travelled with Flybe recently MAN-NWI again via MAN terminal one, and it’s pretty awful, Eastern who used to fly this route, used terminal 3, which was much better, however Eastern’s fare were way over the top for 45 mins !
Talking about Norwich, at one time you could fly Air UK, NWI-LHR, the route went a long time back (along with HUY-LHR which went via NWI) the weird thing is now with more people travelling and traffic conjestion I would thinking getting from Norfolk to Heathrow would be a nightmare by road. I guess most people from that area would go via Amsterdam given the choice, this being KLM’s gain and LHR (and probably BA’s loss).

What kind of facilties are at Carlisle, is it actually a commerical airport or is it more of a General Aviation spot? If so, it would require mega amounts of money to adapt the current facilties to make it into a proper airport.
I love Carlisle Airport, it is my home airport from my childhood and the company I work for have undertaken a lot of work related to this. It was recently sold to WA Developments (whose MD I used to serve in the pub I worked in in the 6th form) by Haughey Airports, who didn’t realise the work involved in developing the facility.
Basically the terminal is a very old fashioned building with, as I recall, soggy red carpets 😉 . Anyway, there are problems with the runway which would prevent Civil Aircraft from using it until it is repaired. Also needs to sort out the RESA. Basically, I hope it takes off, but its not an easy challenge.
In actual fact BLK is a closer and easier to access from the busiest parts of the Lake District, CAX (Carlisle) would serve the north of the county and SW Scotland, but still a good size market, albeit that the yields for the airlines will be poor.
This was mentioned in a recent Airliner World competition whereby entrants had to choose a name for their own domestic airline, and explain what their inaugrial route would be, and some person wrote in with this route suggestion. Can’t remember the exact details, but he claimed it would be good for people who wanted to visit the Lake District?
As for that Airliner World competition…well if I’d been involved in judging I wouldn’t have picked many of those at all!! Most of them had fatal flaws!

Yeah, James, as much as I would like to sing to Manston’s praises, as I do think it has good potential, you do have to wonder why other airlines have not already started services. I think an FR service to Dublin would be perfect for the airport and area itself, but it has not had any schedulded passenger traffic since the collapse of EUJet, and has only just begun operations with one charter operator, KentEscapes.com.
To be honest, the Government are constantly complaining that they need another airport to quench demand in the South-East, and Manston, along with other airports such as Southend and Lydd (London Ashford), all have good potential, but with LGW’s sphere of influence, I really doubt it would be possible, unless there was another start-up carrier like EUJet. Perhaps, it could be called Air SouthEast (intended pun against Air Southwest…poor joke I know 😮 ).
KentEscapes will grow each year next year they are doing flights to Majorca Faro and benidorm I think they are canceling the Barcelona route.I do hope more routes come soon and FR doing a DUB service.
Off topic but do you know what this airline is it Cancelled today:
OAE800 HAHN HHN Flight Cancelled?

BMI tried the LBA-LCY service with a wet leased ATR42 last year. The timings were good but passenger loads were disapointing.

Glasgow International to London City
This was one of the first group of routes introduced by BACX when they started operating to/from LCY a few years ago. It lasted one summer season.

Tried and failed on more than one occasion I believe. Hence I can’t see who would want to operate it at this time.

Personally, I don’t think that a new domestic airline would work, as it would only take the likes of Easyjet, Ryanair, Flybe, etc to put in a couple of services ontop of what the new airline would have, and soon enough they would be squeezed out of the market.
Newquay – Liverpool
Now that is an interesting route, maybe Air Southwest could consider taking it up…they seem to expanding a lot these days.
I have an interesting idea for a new domestic airline that can serve a real niche market, as there is currently no competiting services. Some might know what I am on about, but I don’t really want to mention it on here because of the recent upsurge in critical comments that have been made… 🙁
