Nice to see BA remembering those who fought in the wars.

RE: UK Pic of the day.
Some while ago BA were doing trials with a new form of ILS called MLS (Microwave Landing System). This system allowed a fixed ground installation to transmit vertical and horizontal guidance but the aircraft can approach on any particular track and any angle of glidepath it chooses (unlike an ILS which has 1 track and 1 true glidepath). The 757 fleet (and I believe a few other aircraft) were given distinct nose markings as a reference point so that they could be tracked by observers on the ground and the actual track and glidepath flown could be checked against the instrument selected track and GP.
I only know this because my brother used to fly BA 757’s/767’s and I asked him a few years ago!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-11-02 AT 03:17 PM (GMT)]All of the BA 757’s have a black band on the nose section but I am unsure why this is? Perhaps Wysiwyg would know?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-11-02 AT 02:09 PM (GMT)]I’m probably wrong here but is the aircraft wearing the poppy emblem also wearing the black band around the nose as some sort of equivalent to a black armband?
A very appropriate picture Andrew.
