How many Super Chipmunks are in the UK and does anyone have pictures? I remember one based Elstree back in the 70` or 80`s, i think it was blue and white and i believe it was exported to the States, anyone remember the registration?

Used to be one based at Barton during the early 1990@s cant remember the identity. It was a brute with blown canopy tail mods, big engine and nose,I think it also had wheel fairings. The guy who flew it entered all sort of aerobatic comps with it but I think he had too much oposition from things like Extra’s

Supermunks

The term Supermunk means different things to different people. There is nothing very Super about a Mk. 22 with a Lycoming O-360 fitted.

In the US, where the term originated, they meant clipping the wings, enlarging the rudder area and fitting a Lycoming IO-540 of some description. A few had Rangers, removed from Fairchild FW 24’s but that involved moving the oil cooler to behind the rear seat to prevent a very forward CofG.

G-IDDY was the closest we got to that.

The aircraft you refer is is one of the Bristol Tourer conversions G-APOY which was about then and ended up in Norway. It is in long term storage.
She was in a white wth blue cheatlines scheme. Two others were converted from memory -one ended up in the U.S and in on rebuild with lots of new components and the other was crashed in France.

Kartman I think you are thinking of G-IDDY.
Promoted as the “Mighty Munk” she was modified to full Super Chipmunk standard. Rebuilt from G-BBMS (c/n C1/0359 – WG306) in 1978 after a crash by Harvest Air.
She was powered by a Lycoming 0-540 G1A5 with a Hoffman 3 bladed prop.
She marked the 75th anniversary of Bleriot’s cross channel flight by flying Calais to Dover inverted.
She was sold in December 1999 to America as N311SH.

I have a copy of the excellent tome by Hugh Shields, Rod Brown, Jose Goncalves and Rod Blievers.

Supermunks

I dont know how many in total, but we had 4 at Hus bos as glider tugs, in fact i believe all dhc1-180 supermunks came about due to one man from the RAFGSA who i think was Dick Stratton who decided the Chippy needed a bigger engine. Years ago Bill Fisher published a comprehensive history on the Chipmunk i am sure all the details would be there.
I dont think any have been converted in the last 10 or more years. The last one converted at Hus Bos was G-BBSS. The other 3 were G-BDCC, now written off, G-BCOY (Red & white) G-BBNA ( Yellow & White) known as Bananas!!!!! SS is white overall. There are 2 Chippys at H-B, my old a/c WP809 (G-BVTX) still in Royal Navy colours and Bob Bowles a/c which i am ashamed to say i cant remember the reg at 1.45AM!!!!!
I believe the GSA are selling their a/c i think they had/have about 6 or so.
