Also in the film was Burt Kwouk, who later went on to play Cato in the ‘Pink Panter’ with Peter Sellers

Dave

44-83563 ~ N9563Z went back to the USA after filming the War Lover in England and is now known as “Fuddy Duddy”.

Today it’s owned and operated by the Lyon Air Museum but back in 2005 it was being loaned to the EAA whilst their
own B-17 was undergoing repairs.

It’s pictured here at Appleton Airport on July 28th ~ exactly 70 years to the day after the Model 299 made it’s
first flight from Boeing Field.

Next time you visit the American Air Museum at Duxford ~ pause for a moment inside the entrance and look at the major
sponsors plaque on the left. One of the names is ….. Major General William Lyon 🙂

Hi AdlerTag,
In answer to your query regarding codes and serials being painted on “backwards”, Roger Freeman’s Air Pictorial article does mention that N5229V was noted at Manston after the tailwheel incident with “127742” painted on the port side of the fin in “mirror” form.

Propstrike,
Thank you for welcoming me to the forum.

I believe that this is the Planes of Fame’s ‘Piccadilly Lilly’, now under restoration to fly at Chino.

Little know fact about the War Lover, the top turret gunner, Sgt Handown, was played by Robert Easton who supplied the voice for Troy Tempest’s sidekick in Gerry Anderson’s “Stingray”, Lieutenant George Lee ‘Phones’ Sheridan. Sadly past away just last December. The War Lover also has Ed Bishop who appears in Gerry Anderson’s “UFO”.

Am I right in thinking some of the War Lover B17’s had codes and serials painted on backwards, or was that for 12 O’Clock High?

Siamesed pipes….Trophy.

Steve Mcqueen had a penchant for the Triumph Trophy.

The bike in the Great Escape was a Trophy disguised to look like a German machine.

B17s

There’s an excellent paperback called “Everything But The Flak” Tells the story of how the B17s were acquired, restored, then flown over to England for the film.
The title says it all. It’s a roller-coaster of a book.
Love the photo of SM tinkering with the bike. Another year or so and “Buzz Rickson” would give way to “Virgil Hilts”. Classics.
They knew how to make films in those days

Probably a 500 (trophy) ;there are unconfirmed reports that he took part in the scrambles (motorcross) events held at Ramsden Heath in Essex.

Yup.

As you say, 1955/56 era Triumph TR5C Trophy would be my bet.

In answer to the unspoken question, ‘How was Bovingdon looking yesterday’, here is the answer!

Taken looking towards the prison. The snow-covered runway in the foreground may soon be available for low-key operation 🙂

Thanks for the clarification Iain, and welcome to the forum!

To answer DCW’s question as to the identities of “127723” and “127741” is a bit problematic, since each aircraft had several identities.
To quote Roger Freeman’s Air Pictorial article of 1962, “During filming, the markings of each machine were frequently changed to give the impression of numbers. A further example of this was the use of different markings on either side of an aircraft, e.g., DF-V, bogus serial 127741 on the port side and DF-F, 127743 on the starboard”.
However, the last of DCW’s images shows nose art of “The Body”, which Freeman’s article identifies as N5232V, carrying the identity “DF-V/127762” in February 1962. In the same article is a photo of N5229V dumped at Manston, minus tailwheel and with spurious identity “DF-T/127742”.
Confusing, isn’t it ?
Hope I haven’t muddied the waters too much.

This is a good opportunity to offer these shots of two War Lover B-17’s at the Bovingdon ‘photocall’ . Can anyone offer an exact date and identities of 127723 and 127741 ? And does anyone recognise themselves?

And what did McQueen do to between takes on the War Lover at Bovi..?

Retreat to a secure motorhome like most pampered Hollywood ‘stars’…?

Nope….. what he always did, mess around with a motorcycle…. 😎 (while still wearing full flight gear :D)
