Unbroken film

Hello All
Saw the new film Unbroken last night. A fine film with great performances
and some remarkable CGI sequences. The only slip up comes at the end when
our hero apparently disembarks from Lockheed Electra VH HID which wears the
Pre 1942 red dot USAAC markings plus its modern day civil codes ! Oh well like the
Land Rovers in 633 Squadron or the infamous up and over garage door and plastic
door bell in The Battle of Britain, just a bit careless. The B24 formation sequences
are however a true work of Art.

I came across the book by chance a couple of years ago and was left stunned after I read it. One of the most amazing life stories, in fact, so much so that I wrote to the publisher and asked them to forward a message to Louis for me. I got a reply which was something special. Haven’t seen the film yet, but judging by how profoundly Angelina Jolie was moved by the story too, am hoping that it has been given the justice it deserves. Am looking forward to seeing it.

A fantastic film, I thought. From a purely aviation standpoint, I agree that it had some of the best CGI aircraft, and CGI aerial combat sequences, I’ve seen. It’ll never be “photo real” but this was as close to that as I’ve seen. The mock-up Liberator looked great, too, and the close-up of the B-29 towards the end was very solid animation. I’ll let the Electra inclusion slide, solely because Electras are lovely and, more importantly, the type of aircraft wasn’t important to telling that particular part of the story.

I found the movie good, not great. A bit slow, but worth the admission. The B-24 mockup used in the filming was superb. The computer animation is the best I have ever seen in an aviation application.

Also the aircraft shown in the background in the original photo looked to be a B25 not an Electra. Otherwise an excellent film which even Mrs 12J thoroughly enjoyed

Not forgetting the Shackleton in the background in 633 Sqn.

I made the mistake of reading the book before seeing it and although the film was good, it isn’t a patch on the book.
