Hi,
I’m no expert on the details of flying clothing. Can anyone tell me roughly when these gloves date to? I’m pretty sure they are British and they are definitely sheepskin but beyond that I’m stumped, so any information would be tremendously helpful.

I’m struggling to understand what can be so sensitive about a pair of old gloves that you ‘can’t say’ why you know they are aviation.
In the early days of flying it wasn’t that big a market. People wore whatever clothing was suitable or to hand.
I would say what you have there is a pair of fairly standard motoring / motorcycling gloves that somebody has used for flying.
They are almost certainly not ‘issue’. They were methodically labelled.

I can’t say. Sorry. But trust me, I know these are definitely aviation, I just don’t know when they date from.

The fact they are sheepskin?

How do you know this in the absence of any labelling?
(Just asking, not doubting)

There are no markings either a manufacturer’s label or anything else, including sizes. They are completely blank inside. They are definitely aviation and not motorcycle or other motoring related.

We had a sheepskin pair that looked exactly like that when I was a kid – they must have finally fallen apart and got thrown out in the mid 1980’s. They were not military or particularly aviation related. My Dad had got them as a teenager when he had a motor bike in 1937/38 or so. No doubt sold commercially for anything where your hands got cold – bikes, driving, flying, etc.

No markings anywhere? Maybe motorcycle gloves?

Do we think these might be private purchase First World War gloves? They’re definitely aviation gloves but it would be great to confirm a likely time period for them.

There was a very similar looking pair of gloves lying around at home in the mid 1950s. I had the impression they were ‘old’ then. I have no idea as to the origin.

Hi
well they are not ‘issue’ gloves of any period, certainly not WW2 RAF, there were few ‘issue’ patt. gloves, or gauntlets in WW1 many were private purchase, and varied from similar to yours to thick Bearskin.
I would guess that yours are not of this period, maybe interwar years & of course they could be motorcyclists or drivers gloves.
