Undercarriage indicator,Spitfire ?

I have one of those little indicators, 5C/1731, with the canvas pull-down blind, were these unique to the Spitfire or were they fitted in other aircraft ? Also, was the blind a later addition as i think i have seen these fitted in pictures of early Spit cockpits which don’t seem to have it. What was its purpose, surely if it was just to stop glare a better ,more practical design could have been found .

…and the Walrus, of course.

It’s a Supermarine thing.

What could be more practical than a roller blind? I’ve got one in the bathroom ,works a treat! ( only jealous as I don’t have one!!)
