Underestimated market, again!

I laughed heartily at Tesco’s marketing blunder “Find it cheaper at ASDA and we’ll refund twice the difference”.
Wise punters then scoured the net for the item which had the largest price difference – just to get the Vouchers from Tesco. One punter bagging a whopping £600.
Just like Hoover, offering the free flight to USA if you bought a Hoover. They didn’t realise some people would buy a Hoover just for the flight ticket, and sell the hoover for half price in the paper.

How on Earth these big compananies keep underestimating the buying behaviour of the public is beyond belief, especially as they spend millions designing stores and shelves to sell the maximum of a given product due to location to the door, shelf height, smell of fresh bread etc.

Not old enough to recall the Abbot and Costello sketch?
One of the finest moments in comedy.
You Tube “who’s on first”. Make sure it’s the original Abbot and Costello, there are a lot of impersonations of this particular sketch.

You’ll find the two for a tenner at Sainsbury, Tesco and M & S, who started it.

I dunno.

I eat my words and Humble pie.

Her indoors came home with a Waitrose bag.
“2 x four pints of Milk for £2, and a Meal for 2 including Wine for a tenner”.

I’ll get me coat.

Only the sheer snobbery of the Sains / Waitrose shoppers keep them returning.

Nothing to do with snobbery.

I’m a Waitrose regular. I pay a premium price for the goods there, but have a relaxed ‘shopping experience’. On the days when you really can’t be bothered threading your way through roadblock of fat-bottomed women and their squalling offspring it’s a godsend.

Surprisingly Aldi in Brandon seems to offer an almost equally relaxed experience and much lower prices so I shop there too, despite the limited range. Does that make me whatever the opposite of a snob is?

Cannon ran an offer for university students to get major savings on a couple of the camera bodies last year, the offer ran from May (once exams finish and they go home) until early September (they don’t return until freshers week at the end of the month). Probably spent a large marketing budget sending out info and marketing material, just for no one to see it!

they haven’t underestimated thier market

the truth is they don’t care about loosing the 600 quid

thier marketers look at the lifetime value of the customer

ok they lost 600 quid in one case but worked on percentages and how many extra customers are lured in the losses are a drop in the ocean compared to thier possible gains

as big supermarkets strategies are to entice you there every week

even a shopper spending 30 quid a week will soon recoup the 600 quid

times that by the amount they brainwash to shop there every week

and it soon becomes a win win situation

tesco are not the size of company they are by having dumbasses run it

in fact they are very smart !!

the above info came from an asda area manager/trainer , hell they even employ top psychologists to monitor employee and shoppers behavior !!

don’t ever think for one second supermarkets even loose a penny !!

I know, I agree. I’ve got previous for marketing, it was a long stretch too.
But, lifetime value of the customer? That’s old hat. Loyalty changes daily.
Only the sheer snobbery of the Sains / Waitrose shoppers keep them returning. M&S shoppers return because of a perceived quality + good knickers and Crisps. Between Tesco and Asda is a blood war, shoppers will swap to whover is cheapest for that shop, and to get them to do “That shop” means taking a hit as per my OP. Me, I’m strictly Morrisons/Lidl and the local shops for some stuff, just to keep them open! There is a mahoosive Waitrose 500 yards from me, been in it once in the 6 months it opened. I looked at the prices and shuddered. I “Had” to go in, as they are now the only people selling Root Beer (Sains. stopped apparently – and that was the only product I bought at Sains.). Alas, the Root Beer in Waitrose is Australian stuff, the price of it covers the Air Fare and, it absolutely sh!te tasting too.

Look at Tescos accounts and you will discover that know exactly what they are doing. Arguably one of the five most successful retailers in the world.

Hi tornado 64, my son is a manager of one of the top 4, and I agree with what you say, he often feeds me tid bits on marketing stratergy.
All Supermarkets are more concerned with wasteage than the 500 t0 600 quid.
They even have limits /targets to meet to try and stop same.

the difrence with hoover is they had very little return business for a huge flight offer

there’s only so many people that want a hoover and then it is years till you’ll sell them another

however i have yet to discover a way of getting by every day of my life without eating !!
