ave been reading some stuff on GlobalSecurity lately and they have reported that the North Koreans have built in Underground Airfields with just runaways coming out and being closed.
We’ve seen how once your Airfields are destroyed it is very hard to operate any sort of Aircraft. We’ve seen this happend in Yugoslavia, Iraq and other places. How would Underground Airfields ensure that you can operate your AF effectively.
I think it would be a little expensive to build but it would be worth it. Have some normal surface Airfields to operate normal aircraft(transport & training aircraft etc) and build in underground airbases that would contain the most vital weapons, such as Fighters or Bombers or whatever. This thing would need to be big but it could be built and have strong runaways coming out diagonally out to the surface or could be dug into mountains as tunnels could be runaways.
Another report suggests that some North Korean airfields are underground, they bring up Aircraft via strong elevators up to the Runaways(which are camouflaged) and the Aircraft just fly.
