Underwater Footage of HMS Coventry – Sunk Today 1982

It is a good time to remember HMS Coventry and the nineteen lives lost aboard her…..sunk thirty years ago today:

Also a good time to remember all those lost on 25th May 1982; one of the heaviest days of air-attacks during the Falklands War (on Argentina’s National Day). The British merchant ship Atlantic Conveyor was also set on fire by Exocet missiles on this day thirty years ago, with the loss of twelve lives, while only a few miles from the Task Force flagship HMS Hermes. HMS Broadsword probably had the luckiest day; hit by a single 1000lb bomb that came through the stern and up through the flight-deck (and her Lynx helicopter) while in company with HMS Coventry.

Argentina lost three A-4 Skyhawks (one an anti-aircraft blue-on-blue) on 25th May 1982 with two of the pilots also lost.

My best friends dad was aboard, the classes at school were very thin that day.

Sad times.

RIP. It seems, and must have seemed then, an incredibly long way away, but at the moment my thoughts are frequently with the brave men in the Falklands campaign.

Good call Warren. With all the hype and build up to the Olympics its easy for some to forget the bravery and losses that happened on and around the Falkland Islands, thousands of miles from the UK. RIP to all.

Thanks for the link.

Rob.
