Unducted Fans

Anyone else here read the new articles in flight on unducted fans?

What applications could they have in military applications? Tankers ? Ground attack? similar to the Russian designs?

They explain in their why the Western manufacturers backed out of making unducted fans but did the Russians also drop the idea or do they have aircraft in service today that run unducted fans?
