Unequivocally USAF

A chance to display USAF heavy metal. This first bunch I believe were taken in the late 50s.

That HH-43 shot looks like Wethersfield again to me.

Certainly is, it’s close to where the MOD Police now have their shooting range, which I have had the pleasure of using, Hechler and Koch no less. During their last open day, late 80’s? the Red Horse Airfield Repair Unit spent the whole day detonating that runway with explosives and rebuilding it in record time, most impressive, they even provided a grandstand for our comfort.
I think that the hangar behind is now used to store the gliders and launch winches, it still has it’s sodium lights on every night.
My great regret is that living in Nottingham at the time, I never saw any of the classic Wethersfield airshows of the 60’s, some of the locals have great tales to tell about them, the last true airshow there, 88 I think, was the only time that I actually walked from my house to an air display, and bloody hot it was too that day, I remember the C141 getting stuck in the mud and by the time it did take off I was doing a barbecue in the garden and the sight of this thing just clearing Spains Hall was most impressive.
There’s still a lot of activity up there, a few months ago there was a contraversial night landing by C-17’s and C-130’s containing 4 Para and we are always subjected to the odd mock attack by Apaches.
We have also been told that Wethersfield would be used as a diversion airfield for hi-jacked aircraft, but they seem to prefer to snarl up Stansted instead.
A ‘Retired Airfield’ that has a life, even if it is under the Stansted flightpath, Coltishall take note.

Could the Huskie be taken at RAF Sculthorpe? I’ve only been on the base once but the hangar behind looks familiar?

Regret stumped with the locations of these Glyn. However, ‘24536’ was a Lakenheath-based Huskie, so guess that’s where it is taken.

Albert,

You are right I get the data from a database and foolishly do not always check the accuracy. Many thanks for the correction.

Another six to add to the assortment. All were taken at Wethersfield on 19 May 1962.

Glyn

1 F-100D Super Sabre 55-3669 coded FW-669
2 B-47E Stratojet 52-0581 coded 581
3 F-84F Thunderstreak 52-6629 of Ohio ANG
4 RF-101H Voodoo 54-1486 coded 41486
5 C-124C Globemaster 52-0958 coded 20963
6 Eb-66E Destroyer 54-0434 coded BB-434

Glyn,

The ‘RF-101H’ is in fact an F-101C of 81 TFW and
the ‘EB-66E’ is in fact an RB-66B of 10 TRW

For some reason you are quoting later designations for these types?

Also taken at that show I have a couple of the Frecce sabres. Does anyone have a tie up between the codes they wore and their serials?

Glyn

I may have, Glyn. Please post the photos? Trouble is that the Frecce Sabres were very dark blue with black serials! 🙁

I have checked the Scramble list for the show at Wethersfield on 9th May 1962 and as you say 55-3693 is on the list. As soon as I can I will check with the database I use as this says it crashed in Lybia on 4th March 1958!

The ANG mobilisation was indeed 1962, as was their appearance at Wethersfield. I was there that day, and these aircraft really made the show. In those days you did not get advance warning of what was going to turn up, so surprises such as this were all the sweeter. Wethersfield always seemed to have the knack of getting something really special for their shows, (Turkish F-100, Danish F-84G, German RF-84F, Norwegian F-86, etc, etc.)

I’ve just found that the F-100 was listed as being at Wethersfield in 1959 and 1962. But most of the others were only listed as 62.

Just realised I made a mistake with the caption for the first pic, which I have now corrected, it should have read 55-3693 not 55-5693. This shot could not have been taken in 62 as the a/c was written off on 4 March 1958.

All taken at UK air shows. Ah Wethersfield! The F-86H and F-84F were part of the large numbers of Air National Guard units mobilised when we were all twitchy about the Cuban Missile Crisis, and which conveniently lobbed into Wethersfield for their Armed Forces Day (free entry, free programme….)
